Title: 20 gauge build
Post by: huntnflorida on March 19, 2018, 07:05:44 PM
I finally found a 21" barrel for my old 870 20 gauge. I'll be shooting TSS from this gun. What is the recommended starting point for chokes.

Awesome thanks. I'll be putting a Phoenix kicklight stock on this gun, and haven't decided about optics yet.

Yup 562-5 I have the Phoenix kicklite stock and burris fastfire iii. Love it.

That's gun porn!! I'm contemplating the fast fire three mounted on a Burris speed bead. Otherwise I'd have to get the reciever drilled and tapped.

I sent mine to Sumtoy, Drilled tapped, trigger, Forcing cone, action, bore polished, shur shot stock, I added a Sumtoy .562. I didn't like the choke, a .560 TruLock shot better with federal. I've added the Sumtoy back on for tss. I then went Simmons pro diamond and cerakote. My gun is fully set up top to bottom redone.

190s with Federal #7 heavyweight through TruLock #7 choke.

Still got to run a GT20 apex through it

I have the same set up and shoot a TruGlo SSX.  It's cheaper than many competitors and will throw 180 to 190 with Federal HW#7.  All mentioned are great chokes, but I'd rather spend $36 for a choke instead of $70

If you're looking for a "starting point"—suggesting that you plan to try more than one— I recommend the Remington Super Full (.572" ID). Available from Wally World.com for <$30. It's my "go to" for a 21" barrel 870 when slinging TSS. Average approx 510 in 20" circle at 40 yds with 1-5/8 oz #9's.  Can do the same with my $75 IC .555, but with less even distribution and consistency.
