Title: South Florida hunt
Post by: ChiefBubba on March 18, 2018, 08:04:43 AM
Yesterday for us was exciting took my buddy and his 8 year old out. Had 3 birds gobbling at daylight across the property line in a WMA next to us. Couldn't hear any hens so thought we might be in luck. Was hoping they didn't get intercept by hunters on the WMA. Had 2 hen's start working towards our decoy.  Bird gobbled right across the fence stopped the hen's about 10 yards from us and I thought this is going to be good. Whisper to my buddy and his son to get ready because this was happening all on my side of the blind and they couldn't see it. Came through the gate at 50 yards and the hen's carried them off down the field. But they did put on a show for about half an hour down the field. They gobbled at every call we made to them but wouldn't leave the hen's. Then they circled around us and back off the property. The boy got to see it all and made it a great hunt. Bubba

Sounds like a great introduction of spring gobbler hunting to the kiddo.  Those kinds of hunts are both exhilarating and frustrating.
The most surprising thing to me in your story is that you got no interference from other hunters on the WMA.  The way folks talk on here, there is a hunter behind every bush on any public land in Florida.

We were talking about how lucky we were that they didn't get intercepted by hunters. My buddy I was hunting with was hunting over there the day before right where this bird came from and he said there was 2 other hunters within a 100 yards of him. He didn't want to expose his son to that. So I got him over on my side. Bubba

Great memories come even when birds don't. Good luck for next hunt.
