Title: Rem 870 rattling issue
Post by: Hootin-N-Hammer on March 16, 2018, 12:16:06 PM
I recently bought an early 90's 870  off gunbroker to make a dedicated turkey gun. Well now that I have it in hand, I've noticed the fore-end rattles and shakes make a little noise. Is this normal? I've looked at the components to try and see if there is a washer or something missing, but I've come up with nothing. Anyone have any advice or dealt with this before?

Thanks, Hoot.

Seriously, an 870 with a rattling issue, I thought it was only the 835's that rattle.

I had the exact same issue with an 870 from that time frame. Everything was tight and nothing was missing, but it was pretty noisy.  I added some fuzzy strips from velcro on either side of the forearm between the forearm and the barrel, but the biggest change came from adding a couple of O-rings to the end of the magazine tube.  You have to get the size right so the action closes properly, but it takes the slack out and really quiets everything down.

Confirm the nut holding the forearm on is tight?

X2 check that the forarm nut is tight.

if it bothers you to much I'll take it of your hand ;D,
seriously Take it to a gunsmith and see what they can find in none of the above suggestions work.

Never had an 870 rattle. Mossberg - yes. Maybe movement in the fore end and action bars? Is the fore end wood?

Every 870 I have messed with rattled but not quite as bad as the only Mossberg 835 I ever messed with. 26 years as a police officer and several hundred different 870s that I handled all rattled. I think all pumps probably rattle some. I did the O ring fix mentioned earlier to an 870 supermag and a 870 youth 20 gauge and it helped quite a bit even though I didn't out the strips in the forearm. With the O rings I cant be easy when I close the action though or it will not close all the way.

Yeah, you'll notice from the pic I used two different O rings.  I started with two of the large ones and I had to really push the forearm forward with some force to close the action.  Putting in one of the thinner rings made it just right.  Between the O-rings and the velcro felt, it is completely quiet and feels solid. Now if that fore end nut is loose, that's a whole different issue, but easy to check.
