the whole deal with spring gobbler season is calling a bird into range and killing him, right??? so if you call in a bird but he busts you and runs....you shoot him in the back as he runs killing him.....does this still count 100% ??
It does in my book. You call him into shotgun range and shoot him before he gets out of shotgun range, then mission accomplished.
Counts 100% for me.
If I fool him it counts. I used to shoot on free throws, not so much these days.
I will say this though, on particularly tough birds most any turkey hunter can get to the point where any method used short of illegal is perfectly fine.
It does to me. If I called him in close and can kill him I won. I have other personal rules that would eliminate the possibility of me pulling the trigger but that ain't one of them.
Besides that, 10 years from now my version of the story will probably be my calling was so good that day, I had to shoot him in self defense. I'm getting older every day so it may not even take 10 years to get to that version.
Why wouldn't it?
Yes. If he's in range he counts.
Agree 100%. What's the point of carrying a SxS, O/U, pump or semi if not for the ability to follow up on the initial miss as that bird is getting out of town fast.
It counts if you tag him & tote him out. He should eat just fine, even if he tried to run on you. Win/win the way I see it.
Jim
You'll be eating turkey not tag, counts in my book!
MK M GOBL
It counts as long as he was called in. I've killed a few that way, multiple birds and one busts you so you have to make a quick running shot. Shot a big gobbler a few years ago about 6 foot off the ground. He was with a smaller gobbler that was about to step on me. He busted me and ran but the big bird tried to fly, he was close and it wasn't a real difficult shot. I counted him and was happy to do so. Sure it's a little irritating to know you kind of blew it at the end but sometimes making a good recovery saves the hunt.
It counts if you think it counts is what matters..
You're running for the goal line and trip at the 1 yard line... ball comes loose, but you manage to dive on it in the endzone and make the recovery. TOUCHDOWN!!

Your handle says SteelerFan. Sounds like you've been watching Razorback games. :TooFunny:

I think it depends on how you feel about it. If I called him in and missed the first shot, I would not hesitate to take a second shot running or flying, assuming it was a good percentage killing shot, and I would count it. But, I can totally understand someone not feeling that way and thus not taking the second shot. I really think this is an individual decision we each have to make and live with - just my 2 cents!!
I have no qualms about taking a second shot.....The original question concerned being busted by a bird...In a way of thinking he may be dead, but he won the game..
Ask the turkey if it counts...

Only counts if you "fan" 'em in. All other hunting methods are obsolete.

If the tables were turned and it was a gobbler doing the shooting and he missed you with the first shot, you think he wouldn't take another? That's why they don't let turkeys hunt. At least the feathered ones!!

This isn't the ole west. Your not considered yella for shooting em in the back. Especially if you already called him in.

I'm under the impression that I'm not personally a purest. I'm here to kill turkeys by any legal means. I enjoy it too. However my preferred method is calling one to 25-30 yards and blowing it's head off.
Works for me. The only thing I would say is be careful while swinging the gun your shot does not go someplace you do not want it to go, that would be my major concern, especially if hunting public land.
last year I had a big double beard pegged, opening day I went in on hizz little butt. he came right in to the call, gobbled, strutted, and pretty much made a fool of himself (I like to watch ). so after about 5 mins he sees me and becomes airborn. I blew him right out of the sky with no regrets. yes, if you call him to the gun it counts 100%.
You win, lol. Counts every time

Everyone has their own set of "rules". Don't worry about what what us internet trolls think. Stay true to you.
My understanding of the turkey hunting laws is that if you shoot one running away that you don't have to count it against your limit....
same with roost shooting or drive-by's... at least that's what the guys from Mississippi and Alabama have told me... ;D :toothy12: :newmascot:
Same here in Wv. Heck most of the turkey hunters I know in Wv would be down to the fingers on one hand if only allowed to count birds called in and killed legally. Running away is small potatoes.
If he's riding in the back of my truck after the hunt I would say that it counts! :camohat:
Absolutely counts in my book
