Title: Can You?
Post by: guesswho on March 12, 2018, 12:21:21 PM
Can you look at your beard and antler collection and remember the hunt that each one goes with?  Naturally beards are a tougher challenge.   I can still place the antlers with the hunt but some of the beards have long ago blended together.   I can still remember each multibeard and a lot of the singles, but some I just can't recall anymore.  I wish I had kept a journal and maybe marked a number on each one.  But back in the day I was more concerned with the next one than the memory of the last one.

i can remember antlers fine, I typically don't keep turkey beards. im much like your younger self, too focused on the next to worry about the last.

Not really to be honest. I don't have all the beards or spurs from the birds I have killed so that doesn't help. I can Remember birds from certain areas and I Remember a lot of the birds I helped others kill. I used to never keep spurs ad only have maybe 5 fans. I just give those away to people that fly tie or paint them. I should have dated the beards but to late now.

Antlers are far more distinguishable plus I have less racks as I've never kill more than 2 whitetails in a season but turkeys I've shot as many as 5 in a spring. I can remember most all the hunts in detail just couldn't tie beard spurs and memories together unless there's something unique about them to recognize.

I try and get good pictures with turkeys where deer I don't always have a good picture but I have the rack and I as I euro every deer unless it's getting shoulder mounted

Sure can't. Most of my beards were destroyed by mice in my shop. I lost some totes with antlers during a move about 10 years ago. It's a shame for the longest I could recall the details of many of my hunts but now not so much.  I still remember plenty though and I'm thankful for them all whether I killed or not. I think it has dawned on me that I likely have went on more hunts than I have left so I enjoy them all to their fullest.

I can.....Not!  Of course, I can't remember what happened yesterday....
Now, what was the question again?....  :toothy12:

You can't even remember you have already replied to this thread five times.

I started writing a small reminder of the story for each bird on a note card and sticking it with the fan/beard on the back.

Started a photo journal and it helps.  I used to be able to remember them all with about every detail, not so much anymore.  I started the journal as I figure one day I may not be able to go anymore and I will at least be able to relive it or my boys will have something to remember me by.  I remember most deer when I see the antlers, but there are fewer of them to remember.

Antlers yes. Beards...no for the most part. I can remember a few though.

But that's why I like to take pics. I don't take a pic of every gobbler I kill, but I do take a lot of pics of gobblers I've got, and many other things when I am hunting.

I can remember the hunt and how it unfolded from almost every picture I have of a gobbler.

Like this one.

Don't have all mine either.  A few years back I started saving each beard, tied to leather and stuck in to the hull of the shell I killed him with.  Made a necklace for beards.  Wish I had done that earlier in my career.

I remember the misses more than the kills sometimes.  I like to win, but I HATE to lose-sports, poker, turkey hunting.

My memory is trash. I started keeping a spreadsheet to help me remember them all. I highly recommend this for anyone who doesn't do it. I give a short recap of the hunt. I want to start including specifics like date, time, and bird measurements.

I think your stories are like mine.   They contain the truth, but some details may be enhanced or deleted
For entertainment purposes.

;D  Personally, I prefer the "enhanced" versions.  That's the good thing about the internet, fiction and fact are pretty much inseparable for some of us,...and nobody is the wiser.  I find I fit in quite well under those circumstances...   :toothy9:   :newmascot:

There's a few beards I remember which bird they came off of.  Most of the beards I've collected are in a big ZipLoc bag that I'm doing my best to stuff like a pillow.  Not all the way there yet, but I get closer every year.

I got one beard in 2002 that kind of corkscrews that came off the gobbler that hung up the longest of any I've ever dealt with.  He stayed in sight between 90-120 yards for over an hour.  Light clucking & purrs on my slate finally brought him in. He must have gobbled over 150 times.  I was sure he was either going to lose his voice or somebody else was going to try to slip in, put the mohican sneak on him, and shoot him out from under me.

Spurs kinda run together too.

In all the time I've been hunting turkeys, I've never killed a multi-bearded bird.  I called in one for my best friend on Opening Day 2015 when we doubled and another for a total newbie (around 1999).  We just don't have many of them here for some reason.  Not many bearded hens either, far as that goes.

The first one's are all blended, but the past three years after I shoot a turkey now, I pull out my iPhone. And now I record a movie of how it all happened. Last year a friend of mine an me were seat up on some birds on roost in SD BH.  I had three toms come in to me first and  I shot the strutter. I had my friend set up down the ridge on the other side of them, and as I was paceing off the distance, my shot was from he shoots. He was only a few hundred yards from me so you can hear the blast very well on my phone. They ran right to him after I shot mine and we taged out and headed to WY.

I remember exactly who I am every morning when I wake up.   Trouble is some mornings when I look in the mirror I realize I was wrong.

I can look at a set of antlers and recall the deer in pretty good detail but not so much with beards and spurs. However, I can recall ever Turkey I've killed with great detail if that makes any sense. Something about a successful turkey hunt is a memory that last a lifetime. These birds are addictive as any drink or drug could ever be.

I keep a hunting log with brief details of every hunt I can look back and tell you the day time and weather when I killed my first gobbler or deer. It only takes a min to write it down and years later you'll be glad you did. I cut a small piece of leather and hang it from the string that holds the beard with the date on it I can look up the date and know were and when each was killed. I write the date on the spurs also.

No Sir, not but the more unique shaped beards. Those are easier to remember for some reason. Stuff like a tom I hunted three seasons to kill and his beard was shaped and laid more like a neck tie flat against his chest or a "crooked beard" tom. Antlers are easier to remember the hunt usually but I've killed far less bucks than turkeys. I do have a journal with every turkey recorded that I've killed as well as pictures of most all of them since 1985, brief hunt details and stats. That took a little effort and I'm glad I did it. Someone might find it an interesting read one day after I am gone and get a few laughs.

Yes sir. Almost every one of them. And there's plenty of them too. I could tell you the story behind every antler and beard in my possession.

I remember hunts way more than the bird, I also take a lot of pictures and just seeing the pic will spark the memory of that hunt. I have a lot on FB that reminds me as well, several years ago I started video hunts as well, keeps the memory sharp :).

Worst thing for me, most all of my pictures are of the digital sort anymore. Back quite a while I was sent a virus through an email and lost a lot of those pictures... kind of saddens me but when I talk to those about those hunts they are still in my head.

I also started a turkey hunting log 28 years ago when I started hunting, it's filled with notes and dates things I have done.

Now I do remember some very "special" hunts that I hope to never to forget.

I have a number of "birds" display mounts up from some firsts, my first gobbler, Merriams, Rio and my first double and such, I have my "Top Ten" list of long spurred gobblers and can tell you the story on all of them!! And some "Long" beards that stand out.

And like a few have said, antlers are more "unique" and I can remember them all.

I've always kept a journal.  Even way back in my teens. Without the journal its tough to remember
