Title: Browning auto 5
Post by: chbarnha on March 07, 2018, 08:00:29 PM
Trying to see where you guys think I should start... picked up two boxes of 3" longbeard 5's today and may pick up more tomorrow. I want to get this 3" auto 5 stalker with 26" barrel shooting. I have never found a load that works in this gun... but I have never tried the longbeards in it.
I have a plethora of chokes for it and was wondering where you guys would start. The chokes I have are:
Roy RHodes angleport .655
Carlson turkey choke .665
Stardot choke
Gobbling Thunder .680 choke
Browning extended trap/turkey choke
truglo gobble stopper
Those are the ones I can think of right off hand. thanks for any advice

I would personally start with the .665 constriction . Something I have noticed about the longbeards through research is that you kinda have to think backwards as far as how choke diameters affect your pattern. It appears as though the tighter the choke the more open the pattern due to it shattering the resin more completely. I have not put this theory to test personally but it is something I have noticed through my reading. Hope it helps.

I love those browning A-5's, 665 is the choke I'd use. That's strange you've had trouble finding a load that works in them, I always thought they patterned pretty well with most loads!

the 28" barrel 2.75 inch gun patterns great, the 26" magnum gun not so much. I was just trying to work up a load for it as its a little more maneuverable than the 2.75 gun.

ill pass, that one was my high school graduation present that dad had put away from when they stopped making them. that one isn't going anywhere. the light 12 on the other hand was a lucky pickup at a LGS that had been on the rack for 6 months and hadn't sold. they knocked 250 off just when I inquired about it.

I haven't found any of my guns that wouldn't shoot long beards well, so I would start with the 3" 6's and try all your turkey chokes.

I'm really surprised that Roy Rhodes or Kicks didn't shoot well with the regular black Win Supremes in 5's or 6's...

Nice looking trio!
