I do mine off my bench grinder. I cut, clean and shape then I use 35% hydrogen peroxide (only on the bone, never spur) to whiten. At first I tried clear nail polish and didn't like the look... then a clear lacquer, same deal didn't like the look.
Now I use a sewn cotton polishing wheel on the grinder and a (bone) buffing compound I like how it brings out the color, does not look "fake" glossy they just have a clean sheen.

Wow thanks for the tips on cleaning them up, and Wow to everyone else this is a great post and a lot of nice hooks.
Great information on how to clean em up! I've got my rope of Spurs at home I'm gonna clean up with your method! And yeah I love seeing those ancient limb hangers! Spurs over an inch and a half are true monsters and amaze me

That wasn't mine. I think it was like a $5 rebate check from something. Can't remember. Definitely not mine.

All I did to polish was take a fingernail pad and then use clear coat finger nail polish

I never took pictures of spurs...
I've killed a bunch around 1-3/8" but the two that I consider the best are two birds I killed back to back mornings. They both has 1.5" spurs and roosted together in the same broken down cypress and never gobbled but one time to announce they were awake. Those two drove me nuts for a couple weeks...
Wow those are some beauties
