Title: Practice?
Post by: mtns2hunt on February 26, 2018, 06:00:40 PM
Does anyone practice shooting prior to the season? I set up five or so cans at verious distances on top of old arrows. This puts them at the right height and distance. I then shoot low brass shells at them out to 40 yards. I use the 12 oz Red Bull cans for their size. They look small at 40 yards.

I have found that even at  40 yards the low brass really makes a mess of the cans although at 40 you will find shot  inside the can. Later you can try your regular Turkey shells.

This will give you an accurate idea of what your shooting skills are (get rid of the flinch) while preparing for that perfect shot. No holes you've got a problem. Most times if your shotgun is patterned you will do okay but still improve. This kind of shooting is fun.

To ad abit more challenge. Drink all your Red Bull prior to placing the cans on the arrows. This mimicks the adrenalin flow. LOL just keep a defibulator close by.

Practice shooting with your off hand with low brass. That way when a bird comes in on your off side you'll be prepared for the shot.

This is worth taking the time to do every year

Low brass...  Key point there.

Practicing with and shooting high volumes with high-recoiling turkey loads will possibly, or likely cause some flinching issues.  Plus, it ain't much fun.

I shoot some paper and cans every year around 40 yards, but unless I am changing loads or chokes, I rarely fire one of my "prized turkey loads."  I cannot shoot lead, so Hevi-shot for me, and considering the price and the recoil of those loads, light target loads are a far better choice for practicing.

But, I was actually thinking about practicing shooting from my off-hand, just to be comfortable (or at least more comfortable) with that shot...  That there is some great advice.

I usually practice shooting left handed some. im a right handed shooter but sometimes shooting both ways comes in handy.

The last gobbler i shot last year i had to shoot with my off hand. i could tell he was coming in on my off hand side and it would be easier to change hands than to reposition myself on the tree, so that's what i done. Worked out good. I can't say I've ever practiced shooting with my off hand on a consistent basis, but i will shoot clay birds with my off hand every once in awhile just to mess around. Good info here.
