Several very impressive photos of 40 yard patterns of TSS posted on OG. While they are very impressive, the overwhelming majority of turkeys that I have killed have been under 40 yards. While I certainly can appreciate the desire to have a hard hitting turkey gun at 40 yards, but what are these TSS loads looking like at under 40 yard distances. Worried that the patterns may be too tight at closer ranges making hitting a turkey and being exactly on target that much more critical. Before I invest $8 per round, curious if anyone had tested at shorter ranges or had any thoughts?
From what I've seen even the tighter patterns are no smaller than the pattern produced by the Winchester long beards. I use to have a picture of the pattern with the 2.5oz load I use but couldn't find it earlier today. It was more open that I though it would be though.
20 yards mine is about the size of a basket ball
Shot mine hand loads ( 3 loads) and Apex at 20 yds. All from my 20ga and like the Ninja said between soccer ball and basketball size pattern.
My 40 yard and 20 yard out of Browning BPS 12 with 3" 2.25 oz of straight 9s. The 20 was from my initial sighting in with a new choke and the 40 was my final shot as to what I deemed as "on". Pretty forgiving on both ends. 40 is the shoot to see target and 20 is the white target with the red dots.
