I really like the YellowHeart + Black Limba combo..
Yellowheart over black limba took 2nd in the mountain state callmakers comp.
Mike's boxes are top notch. I've bought several from him. Most of them, I have gifted to buddies of mine and they have loved them. I currently run his bloodwood over walnut. Great sounding box. Give Mike a call or PM him, he'll fix you up.
I just don't know what wood combination I want from him. maybe yall could point me in a direction I want something that is clean yet has some rasp.
Here's Mike's numbers: 269 223-3621 cell

Contact him and have him play a few for you and see what you like. I fell in love with his Bloodwood over Walnut but everyone has a different ear for what they like. You can PM him on here as well.

thanks yall I believe I'm going to go with Jotoba over Sassafras or Jatoba over butternut

. I have this combo from Jeff among others and it sounds great!
I have one and it's a nice box. I bought it when I really started turkey hunting. I thought I would like a box but I fell in love with pots. I still like boxes just don't use it much. Out of the box makers though I opted for spring creek because it's hard to beat it for the money

Yellowheart/limba IMO.
i have a walnut over either maple or sycamore cant remember. It sounds good. easy to run.
For me, if I want a box call from a custom call maker, I am going to call him.
I ordered one from Spring Creek, told Mike what I wanted, and told him to use whatever wood he suggested... He made the call sound exactly as I had requested.
For me, a large part of the pleasure of purchasing any custom call is to talk to the call-maker and give him/her a bit of "artistic freedom" in designing a call personally for me...
my wife bought me one as a gift. I love it. Killed a bird last year and the year before with it.
I am looking very hard at Mike's jatoba over maple box and bloodwood over walnut. The front end pitch and squawk on the back end sound almost identical to a boss hen in the open river and creek bottoms where I hunt most.
