Title: Savage 212 Turkey
Post by: Ovahbored on February 14, 2018, 04:04:17 PM
Though I've been casually hunting turkeys for years I'm looking to get more into it this year and am looking for a dedicated turkey gun.  I've seen a few online reviews on the special order bolt action Savage 212 Turkey but am wondaring if anyone is actually using them in the field.  I realize a bolt action may not be the most practical choice but I just like bolt actions and am very comfortable with the platform.  Never would have considered a 20 Guage but all those talk about the TSS shot has me even considering the 20 guage version (220).  I like the idea of the detachable magazine, accutrogger and ease of mounting an optic.  However an 835 at half the price seems much more practical.  I like the idea of the overbore barrel on the 835.  Though I don't see the need for 3.5 inch shells for Turkey it is a nice option if I also used it for predator calling.  I realize I'm overthinking this but am curious on your thoughts.

welcome to OG. I've never seen that gun in the turkey woods, most of them have been built into turkey shoot guns.

The gun in current production seems to be rifled. Not what you need/want for any type of shot. slugs only.

The gun was just made for a short period of time , and if you find one you will be very lucky,,, It was a smooth bore with rifle sights and a turkey choke... That's why it had the T after the 212....turkey model...

I like the sound of it.  The AccuTrigger is very nice. The turkey gun is still available, but you have to go through the Savage Special Order department.

i had the 12 and currently have the 20. Good smooth actions, strong and the detachable magazine is a great feature.  If all goes well this year, I plan to use the 20 at least part of the time.
By the way different barrel lengths are available on that gun.
Thanks,
Clark

Thanks for the input.  Yes, my understanding was the smoothbore version of the 212 or 220 slug gun was only available as a special order item.  Realize it may not be the practical choice but I'm surprised there isn't at least a few bolt action turkey shotguns.  I like the idea of the accutrigger, detachable magazine and rifle like stock.  I'm thinking a 212 with a weaver V3 and a 22 inch barrel may be a fun turkey gun.
