Title: Sighting in red dot or scope
Post by: Laloom83 on February 08, 2018, 09:10:11 PM
Hey guys,

Any recommendations on sighting in a red dot or scope without having to use expensive shells?  I want to shoot Nitros and heavy shot magblends but really don't want to use that expensive ammo to sight in a red dot or scope.  Also, what yardage do you suggest sighting in.

Thanks,
Bishop

For my scope I start at 12.5 yards so I can have exact click changes. I shoot a dove shell at a target until I get it center.

Then I back to 25 yards and shoot at the same exact spot twice. Then check my poi.

Once I do that I move back to 40 yards. I shot a turkey shell. Usually it is where I want but has needed a fine tuning here or there. Good luck.

They should hit the same spot 5-40 yards. It is not like a rifle

Can't say this for everyone because we all have different styles of hunting. My scope is sighted in dead-on at 15 yards, now this is what works for me, as it is at my range. I have checked pattern out to longer distances... I just bought cheap trap loads to get it close and then ran my hunting loads after.

I shot bird shot at 15yards make sure it is on. Then move to 40 and shoot still with bird shot. Once it is on then put a turkey load in and shoot from 40. Make any adjustments if needed and then I'm ready

As others have posted, bird shot at 15 yards till centered. Bird shot at 40 till centered. 1 Turkey load to confirm.

Don't think for one minute either that you can't bore sight that scope on that shotgun if you have a bore sight ...  I do all mine at 15 - 20 yards...

I usually set up a big target at about 15 yards or so. 3x3 sheet of cardboard or similar. I put a orange stick on aiming dot in center of target. I then setup my gun in a lead sled type of rest, or something that will hold gun rock steady. I then take a shot and see where it hits. I then re-aim gun at target dot (unloaded) and direct an assistant to make the adjustments to move the dot to the impact point while I am looking through sight. Usually works really well and takes only a shot or two. I then check it at 40 and make any corrections. I'm mostly concerned with the closer poi, as the pattern will be like a softball inside 20-25 yards, where it's easier to miss, and the pattern will be big enough at 40 that a small shift in impact will be ok.

X2.  Using adjustments at 12.5 and 25 yards with dove loads gets you really close to POI/POA, allows you to make spot on elevation and windage adjustments, as most red dots use 50 yards as your adjustment base and saves your turkey loads for a 40 yard finish.

This.   Most effective way I've found.
