Title: 535 Turkey Thug
Post by: Leon3 on February 02, 2018, 10:12:54 AM
Good morning fellas, I have fully intended to purchase a 20 ga 870 youth to build a nice, light, compact pea shooter this year to chase turkeys.  However I'm still not 100% sold that that is the particular gun I want.
I usually search the local forum boards looking for a 20ga to build and just came across a Mossberg 535 Turkey Thug that I can purchase for $250. It's definitely a different direction than I was looking for, but the price sure seems right.  Is this worth picking up?

I looked at a Mossberg today at the pawn shop. I think it was a 510. It was dipped in obsession and was super short a lightweight.  It seemed smaller than the 870 youth models I've held. The pump was also pretty "stiff" or not smooth. It would be great for carrying though. Sorry I don't have any advice for the 535

It's only a good deal if you like it...personally I would save for either an 870, 835 or 500.  If you are inclined to use 3.5" shells it's nice to have the over bored barrel on the 835, the 535 does not have that feature.

If you want a 20, then save for the 20.  I have an 870, but the mossy is nice since it's already drilled and tapped and has a top safety.

I had a 535. Very light gun with lots of recoil. It was ok. Shot some decent patterns but kicked you like there's no tomorrow. I would get a headache after 2 shots so I traded it in. Great carry gun for the long walks.
