Title: Top turkey books
Post by: ddturkeyhunter on January 15, 2018, 10:27:18 AM
Was looking to buy REMEMBERING THE GREATS by Jim Casade from Amazon but out of stock. Any Ideas who else might be selling this book? Any other good suggestion on good books, finally have a little time to read again.

Personally think Col. Kelly's Tenth Legion and Ken Morgan's One Man Game are two of the finest ever made, never read the Casada book but want it bad and indeed it's hard to find.

A couple of years ago I found an old copy of Turkey Hunter's Digest by Dwain Bland at the local used book store. Not sure of when it was originally printed, no dates on the copywrite...Last year I found the same book, only a revised edition (1986).  Both are an excellent read with lots of old-school tips & techniques. I have around 15 turkey hunting books & many of them regurgitate the same "how-to" material. I would throw anything Ray Eye writes into the "keeper" pile.

A couple more good ones are The wild turkey and its hunting by E.A McIlhenny.....The American wild turkey by Henry Edward Davis.....The Old Pro turkey hunter by Gene Nunnery...I have around 200 or so turkey hunting books another one of my obsessive behaviors. Lol..

I read and collect them as well. Just ordered a signed copy of "East of the Slash". Hope to one day own a copy of Tall Timber Gabriels. I'll echo what others have said Morgan, Eye, Nunnery, Kelly are all good ones to have.

I really learned a lot about turkey behavior from Illumination in the Flatwoods by Joe Hutto...so much so that I had to go back and read it again....caught things the 2nd time that didn't dawn on me after the first read.  good stuff.

All above listed are very good.

Books I'm very interested in reading but haven't yet: Turkey Men volumes 1 and 2. Profiling the guys who have completed the US Super Slam. Including Old Gobbler's very own, Dave Owens, also known here as "Cove"

"Bad Birds" is definitely my all time favorite, one I always read pre-season.

I'm also very fond of the three turkey hunting books written by John M. McDaniel of Virginia. They contain a great mix of useful information with a lot of great storytelling.

If you enjoyed reading Hutto's Illuminations in the flat woods, go on line and search for "My Life as a Turkey"
its a video documentary on Hutto and his turkey experience. He went on to live with mule deer and bighorn sheep out west too. I used to show this video in my high school wildlife management when we did our unit on wild turkey management. A few of my students emailed him for a while keeping up with what project he was working on at the time. It pretty much follows the book.

Haha! I understand. I have to be careful on there or I'll get in major trouble on the home front.

Anything by Tom Kelly or Kenny Morgan or Earl Mickel or Lovett Williams a lifetime of reading there. I still say Tom Kelly's "Take Back in Fancy" is one of his best.

I just pulled out the only turkey hunting book I own the other day. It's Turkey Season by outdoor life. My favorite part is the story by Ray Eye It's about him hunting on the mountain with his grandpa. I actually was getting a little emotional there at the end of the story and had to take a short break. I was reading the story to my kids and they were looking at me like what's the  matter with  you dad lol.

Anyone like the Tom Gaskins series?  Tom Tells Tall Turkey Tales, Florida Facts and Fallacies, and We Talk Turkey.  We Talk Turkey is a classic with stories sent to Mr. Gaskins from dozens of turkey hunters and even a several killers, some true and surely some a bit stretchy.

You will read this one twice!! 2 books that I have read 3 times each is -Turkey Hunting-- A one man game and Wayne's Turkey World-60 years of hunting. I also really enjoyed the Greatest Moments Of My Life by Jack Dudley and The Old Pro Turkey Hunter by Gene Nunnery. After I read - Remembering the Greats--profiles I knew what books to buy.

I went to a gunshow Sunday, and one guy had a few books, and he had the Old pro turkey hunter for $5. I bought it, he had a couple others but they didn't interest me. I've just about finished it, and this is a great book!

My favorite all time story by Tom Kelly is Forty Crook Branch in Better on a Rising Tide. If you have kids, I don't think you can read it without getting a lump in your throat.

x2. I've read almost all of Tom Kelly's books, and this is by far my favorite chapter that he ever wrote. If you have kids, it will really pull at your heart. "Better on a Rising Tide" is an all around great book.
