Title: Just wondering....
Post by: Happy on December 31, 2017, 03:48:19 PM
So  this earlier tss thread got me to thinking. How many here are more into using old tried and true accessories than the newest, latest and greatest developments? I believe I am more of the latter. I still use my original turkey gun and deer rifle, my bow is going on 8 years and I stockpile ammo and arrows so I am set for years, as far as hunting clothes and boots go I just have people by them for christmas or birthdays. I am always a sucker for a good knife but my favorites are at least 10 years old. This year I used a buck Akuana for my deer knife. It is from the 70's and I felt it sat in a case for too many years. My climbing treestand is 20 years old this year and still gong strong. I like simple and familiar. It works well for me and I feel pretty efficient with it. Not that I feel like all new stuff is bad but I just like using things that are proven. I see some hunting clothes in the stores and look at the price tag and i wonder if there was a misprint. Run my fingernail across the material and know I wouldn't pay 10 dollars for it. The most deadly hunters I know aren't using the latest and greatest. Heck I doubt they have bought new socks in five years. But they are efficient and I wouldn't bet against them. Not knocking the new stuff at all. These are just my observations.

I'm turning 40 this year. I'm still using the same blaze orange jacket I got when I was 16 for deer hunting along with the same camo bibs I got when I was 18. I finally broke down and bought new camo turkey pants and shirt last year. Before that it was stuff I got when I was 15 to use for archery deer. Same Deer rifle since I was 18 and turkey gun I got when I was 25. The gun I used before that I got when I was 18 and it's still in use for small game.

Thank god for the NEW STUFF, I've been hunting for over 50 years, and this new stuff will keep me a lot warmer.. As a kid until i was 22 year old, i didn't know what a pair of insulated coveralls were and if you had pair of good insulated boots you were at the top of the game... About having and carrying that old shotgun , sure glad i have new and better shotguns with these choke tubes. My first real hunting knife was Buck 110, i own about 6 of these knives and many more different types. Bow's I've had several of these during the years.  So at the age of 60 I REAL APPRECIATE the newer and better things in life.  I sure don't miss those old 6 cylinder straight shift truck either with not air. I enjoy my new Chevy Silverado truck with back up camera lot better these day's, the old neck doesn't turn like it did when i was in my 20's .. I like my new recliner and computer, i'm not ready for the old rocking chair YET...lol ..... I do like collecting old hunting item's calls, knives, gun's and old cast iron pots and dutch ovens ...  If i tried to wear anything i had back in high school i would have to go naked...I enjoy the better camo clothing it's a lot better than what we didn't have, the reason i worked for over 40 years and retired was to enjoy the better things in life...

Some of the newer things are much better than the old stuff, but I dont just run out and get the latest and greatest new stuff either. I bought my bow in 2000-2001 and it is about wore out. I switched from aluminum arrows 2 years ago because I bought 10 dozen aluminum arrows from a shop that was going out of business. My old boat was a 1969 18' flat bottom and I upgraded to a 15' 1999 Express. I still have my Columbia coat and bibs I bought in the late '90's Im gonna have to upgrade cause they are a little small. 2 years ago I got my first flat screen TV cause the old one died. Got my first Blue ray player cause the dvd/vhs player died. I dont buy new stuff just because there is newer stuff out there,I replace stuff when its worn out.

Now some of the stuff now is much better that the old stuff. I love my lined wader pants much better than jeans and long johns. My new waders are much warmer than the old uninsulated rubber or canvas ones. Some of the new clothes they have out are much warmer with half the bulk.

I believe technology and innovation has made sports better.  Warmer lighter clothes, better ammo, better guns ie. better everything IMO but it all comes at a HIGHER cost.  Each of us have to look at our personal wallets and evaluate, Is this really worth the return?  We ALL have an opinion, for some yes and others no.  Each of us have to evaluate the current sales pitch and see if it fits our budget first and foremost and see if the new technology REALLY benefits our goals.  My Dad and Mom had a saying when I was growing up, "Don't let your WANTS hurt you."  In other words, can the cost of the item you are about to spend money on REALLY make LIFE that much better for you.  It's up to each of us to make that determination daily.

This is my young rookie take on things:

I don't have cable tv or satellite
We didn't even have a tv u til about a year ago when someone thought we were poor and bought us a big flat screen tv.
I don't have a boat
I don't have a 4 wheeler

Nothing against any of those things, allot of guys have RV payments, boat payments, atv payments, etc...

Me I like my new hunting stuff, is a box call really a new call when the Oregonian design goes back beyond most of our birthdays.

I like new camo, I like new guns, I like new shells, I like new knives, I really like New climbing deer stands..... happy you need to try a summit viper you will climb that tree in half the time and not need to go to the chiropractor as much because it weighs half as much. I like new boots. And thanks be unto God the Lord has allowed me to have these things, the Lord gives me health and strength to go to work and to be-able to work so I can afford these things. I love my new Toyota Tundra with electric start and heated seats. I am not being boastful I wouldnt have nothing if it were not for the blessings of God.

So me I like old stuff like
Old John Deere's and hit and miss motors and even old trucks and cars but when it comes to hunting I like new stuff.

Thanks but my stand only weighs about 18 lbs and I can be up a tree in minutes. Also my father in law is a chiropractor and my wife is a CA so it kinda works out:).

Lol I need to go hunting with you then, you always crack me up lol.

I enjoy reading your threads and these posts.

I will have to agree with some of you, that some the old stuff is built better, like the old Remington's. Old knives with American made steel blades, there is advantages to new and old.

Some folks say I would never pay 1800.00 for a super black eagle benelli.

I could go out and buy a Remington 870 that would cost 300.00 and shoot poa/poi butni
Like the feel of a benelli and of a franchi.

It's funny how we all have different ideas and thoughts and that's what makes this great American sport called Turkey hunting great.

Come on up anytime bottomland. Unfortunately the only property I can take people on is public ground though. I have over 70,000 acres of hunting club in two states but unfortunately no guests. I will warn you that that I have been referred to in not very nice names when guiding as well. The phrases, sadistic, death march, and crazy are heard frequently. I have also heard the phrase I can't feel my @$$!! Muttered a few times after some little hikes up these mountains. One of my favorite things to do when taking a newer hunter is when one gobbles in the predawn darkness is to grab the new guy by the shoulders and exitedly whisper "what the heck was that!!!!" "It's not dangerous is it?"
That really makes them wonder what they just got into.

If it can increase my odds of killing a turkey the way I like to hunt or make me more efficient, I'll buy it.

There are some of the new things I wouldn't want to give up now like my Thermal Cell, or my DSD decoy. Other wise I am set for years. But still can't wait to see whats NEW EVERY YEAR in the Midwest Turkey call every spring.

I'm not a new equipment junkie by any means. I'll use the same old 870 I started with till one of us can't hunt anymore. But sometimes the new stuff completely changes the game HVY shot and thermacells are two items I would not want to give up.

Thinking of getting a thermacell. Do they really work as well as people are talking about? Last year I got bit up so bad plus for outdoor concerts and things. Really hope it works.

Some people just need to get out of the Flintstones error. I'm a person who loves peanut butter on crackers, toast, biscuit's and the good old jelly and peanut butter sandwich. My favorite brands are Jiffy and Peter Pan. One day my wife bought home a new jar of Peter Pan honey roast creamy and guys and girls let me tell you it was game changing.. One of my main breakfast sandwiches is peanut butter and jelly out in the early morning turkey hunting woods. SO don't be afraid to try something new, it could be new guns, call's , truck's , knives, new camo or MAYBE A NEW WIFE... I have never liked a wife that didn't like to listen to her husband play turkey calls in the house all day.. My wife in 40 years of marriage has never complained what i buy for hunting, fishing, collecting or just plan enjoying life... You should just see our walk in closet and just how many pair's of shoes my wife has , i guarantee she can wear a different pair 365 day's a year. But i will never complain.. Old stuff is nice and new stuff is also...

They really work and are worth the investment .. you can get a camo pouch and wear it on your side of just lay it down beside you and they even have a way to hook it next to you in a tree if you bow or gun hunting..

Some things have changed with the times, and others not so much...

Rain gear and hunting clothes have come a long ways since I started hunting as a child.  As a duck hunter it is a lot easier to stay dry and comfortable than previous, and I see no reason not to take advantage of such.
With more hunting pressure and smarter birds (and changes in bird behavior) I use the most realistic and best quality duck decoys I can afford...  Small spreads with quality decoys can make a difference between watching sunrises and shooting ducks.

Calls have changed in duck hunting, and I have my favorites (for both ducks and geese).  Mouth calls have evolved since I started turkey hunting, but box calls and friction calls...  Not so much.
Hunting packs...  Some of the newer packs are certainly better (but way over-priced for me), but a lot of the new stuff is junk...  I still have (and use at times) the military pack I used as a kid...  Just got my oldest daughter a military pack that will likely last a lifetime (she is seven years old)...

I cannot use lead shot to hunt in California, so Hevi-shot is my choice for turkeys (I cannot afford such for waterfowl hunting).  On a good year turkey hunting, I will fire three rounds...  The cost of having good ammunition for such low volume shooting is a drop in the bucket compared to the cost of gas for me to drive out...  Not to mention the license, stamps, and all the other unnecessary hunting crap I purchase.

Shotguns...  If I could still shoot lead, I would prefer shooting some of the older shotguns...  I have my grandfather's A-5 that is a pleasure to wing-shoot with, and I am dead on with that gun...  Finding modern loads that work in that gun is a bit of a chore though.  I have an older Citori as a well as a Winchester 101 that I still shoot a lot of pigeons with...  Those guns are solid reliable guns and great shooters; not much has changed in break-action guns, and the old ones are as good or better than the new ones.

That being said, my primary duck/turkey hunting gun is a Beretta that I have shot about 10 years now...  I will replace it with a new modern gun when/if it no longer works.  I redneck'd the gun with a can of Rustoleum last year to camo it out, and as the paint comes off, I patch paint it with either browns (for duck hunting) or greens (for turkey hunting)...

Happy it's just hard to find a wife anymore who come's from a hunting family.. i was very lucky to find my wife 41 years ago. After dating for a year and hunting, fishing and camping with her family i new i had a keeper.. Sorry that your didn't turn out so good.. My mother and father divorced and i was just 12 year old and i had to start working mowing grass, doing odd jobs and working on paper route just so i could have money for lunch at school and other things i needed. My mother worked 3 jobs most of her life just to support us 3 kids... I not longer have my mother or father they both died years ago. My oldest brother died in my arm's one day fishing on the Tennessee River from Lung cancer enjoying what he love doing. I still have my youngest sister and lot's of family and friends and i plan on enjoying whatever make me happy until the good Lord decides i need to come home...

Oh I get it. Greg no shots fired your way. I made my "new"wife an outdoors woman. She always wanted to live in the country. She shot her first gun with me and now target shoots with a bow as well. Guess with both of us coming from failed marriages made us both realize what matters the most. We are a great team. I don't hunt near as much as I used to and that's a decision I made. I am a husband and father now. I want to be everything my father was not. My kids are getting the love and support that I never had and my wife is getting it as well. We both have our hobbies, hers is coaching volleyball and mine is in the woods. We share duties and make it work so we both have a little fun time. Our kids almost always have one of us around and life is good. Once they are out of the house I will hunt more but that just isn't the top priority now. I want my daughter to see how a good husband treats his wife and for my boys to see how a man acts. Not these selfish little boys running around these days. I honestly believe the death of the family has led to the decline of america. I don't want to support that trend.

I still have my original shell and I plan on using it one day.  And who wears socks!

I'm more of comfortist.  If it's works and I'm comfortable with it, it's hard to get me to change.  Most of what I use has some age on it.  I have patches that are clothed together, for those that don't know, that's more patches than original material.  My boots/shoes both have a good 7-10 years on them.  My newest equipment is my gun/shells which this will be their 2nd season.  And my mouth calls are 8-10 year old but some are still in the package and in standby in case I have a blow out.  The newest call I have is my Mark Sharpe cane call and I'm guessing it's 4 or 5 years old.   Even hats are hard to change.  My current one is on year 7 and the one before that was well over 10, and the only reason I changed then was it fell victim to an unfortunate bushhog accident and I had to put it down.  Literally held a ashes to ashes ceremony for it and cremated it.   Even have pictures of the ceremony.   People see me in camo in the store getting coffee and most think I probably can't even spell turkey let alone kill one.

Oh, and I still have the original Wife.  She has a lot of miles on her but she's dependable.  And I figure it's cheaper to keep up the maintenance on her than it would be to trade her in for a new model.

Alot of things don't live up to the hype .... the thermacell is not one of them. Some spring days in Louisiana after a 3 day rain and temps in the low 90s I would rather forget my gun than the thermacell I have one in my vest and a brand new in the box backup in the truck at all times. I hated the old days of having to spray down with the bug sprays they only worked on the areas you sprayed sweated  off in a couple hours and would fade your camo and take the finish right off a wood stock.

It sure didn't take me long to buy a Thermacell when they came out.   I can't think of a turkey season yet where I didn't have something new to hit the woods with.
I picked up a new pair of camo pants just yesterday when I saw 'em on clearance.  That may well be the only new item I hit the woods with for spring 2018.

I love my SBE II shotgun, red dot, choke, and Hevi shot. It hammers gobblers efficiently.  The slate call I use is 28 years old and I've lost count how many notches it has...it's more than just a few.  I hunt deer with the .308 Winchester Model 70 Featherweight I bought new in 1981. I haven't bought another primary deer rifle because shooting that one is like shaking hands with an old friend. Besides, it does all I need it to.  I replace camo & boots as they wear out.  I love the new fabrics and camo finishes.  GoreTex is your friend, so are ThermaCells.

I bought a North Carolina lifetime sportsman's license in 1986 when I was 25 and it has more than paid for itself by now that I'm 57.

My jake decoy was made in 1996 and it still works great.  My hunting knife is a Buck Lite 422, which I bought in 1986. If it could talk, it would speak of a busy life. It goes hunting every time I do.  I have a backpack in original TreBark I bought in 1989 that still works great & loves to hunt too.   My current box call is a Q.B. filed grade boat paddle that I bought in the 90s.  It has a lot of turkey in it and quite a few notches on it as well.  I deer hunt from a Cadillac climbing stand that I've owned since the late 80s.  No telling how many deer I've killed from it. Lots & lots.

All those things will probably out-live me, but they have all served me well.  I have nephews who can fight over it.

I bought my scuba gear in 1993 and it has been with me for every minute of the 1,300 hours I've logged underwater so far. It gets serviced every year, because it is life support gear and needs to be in top condition.  I have had so many Discovery Channel moments right before my eyes with it.  If I were to check out tomorrow, I'd be O.K. with that, because I'm way ahead on adventure in my life.

I'm still on the original wife (24 years now), she encourages me to turkey hunt, because she loves the meat and understands that I need & love the challenge.  She's not much for hunting and fishing because she's got an equestrian obsession. She doesn't interfere with my outdoor pursuits since she rides her horse 5 days a week.  I'd rather have her riding his @$$ than mine.

I tend to stick with what works, but I adapt to improvements in gear which allow me to maximize my free time. It's crazy not to.

Jim

I don't mind trying new and improved. Sometimes it works out sometimes I end up going back to whats worked for years. As far as the Wife I've had mine for almost 25 years. Don't want to find out what it might cost me to try something else new.

My wife hopefully by the Grace of God my first and last. Made an oath before God rill death due us part.  She Hs decided to learn to play a pot call.  Amazing she's a girly girl and a godly modest virtuous woman, she's a paying woman, she's a homemaker, she's a hard worker, she is beautiful, she is sweet, she is my best friend, and by the grace of God she says go hunting hunny you love it. In the mornings I finer her reading her bible and praying while drinking coffee. When life gets hard and the ministry gets hard she's my coach. Boys I got a good woman. She has had ample
Opportunities to kill deer and has been with me while I have shot numerous with a bow, she just watches and smiles and says you love this don't you. That smile she greets me with is better then any gobbler could ever put on my face, that encouragement she gives when I feel like no one care is better then killing a grand slam. They threw the mold away when they made her. Our house is always clean, my clothes are always clean, groceries are always bought and put away, dishes are always cleaned, and she knows I don't like scented detergent so she washes all out clothes and linens in non scented detergent all year so extra protection during deer season.

I don't need a new wife I got the best one a man could ask for, home cooked meals. Praise God I  am a blessed ol country boy. God has been good to this ol boy. Fellors if you don't know Jesus he is the greatest thing that will ever happen in your life! He will change you life, your family, your outlook, he will clean you up and make you not even like yourself because you will love him so much.

Oh what sweet grace He gives.

I don't want to support that trend.

good post

I'd just like to fit in my camo clothes from highschool.

That said I have gotten over a lot of the latest and greatest craze but I still look for improvement.  Camo isn't as important as function, and I'll upgrade my bow semiannually partly because I work for a bow company.  And tss has proven itself to be the best performing loads for me.
