Cedar over Poplar paddle call from Steve Mann. Since 2004, well over 100 gobblers have came to this box. It's deadly. I take it on every hunt- no exceptions.

I don't own a single longbox yet,,but it looks like a cedar lid is the one to consider when I do.

Guys,,would "spalted" Sycamore make for a good sounding long box or is it too brittle ???,,with those nice black lines and specks in a long piece of wood I think it would be beautiful,,anybody know of any examples.

I see a trend....
What about Cedar makes it so sweet sounding on a boxcall? With so many different types of wood out there, it really is the undisputed champion.
I'm not a longbox expert. Only have 5 but my very favorite is a McKamey bloodwood over mineral poplar. I've heard more than what I own but stand by that longbox

Marlin Watkins makes a mora over persimmon that, if there's a better call in the world, I haven't heard it...His ipe over butternut is something to hear also...
