Both Richard Hudson and Irving Whitt make fine hen boxes.

Denny, check out some of the Hen Boxes under the Turpin thread. Some beautiful calls and they sound great.

Great sound!
I'd have to say. Billy Buice, Hudson, Lyman or Eddleman can't go wrong with any of them.

His neck had been hurting him a bit but he was making a few in February. I got mine from him at Nashville. He's a good guy.
I am still buildng calls even though i have slowed down some. I will do my best to build call as often as possible.
I have several from multiple makers and IMO hands down Richard's are head and shoulders the best. Plus he's a super guy!!
Hey guys I have one of Richard 's trumpet that he donated to a local forum to help fund it that I won, I would trade it for one of his hen boxes, great looking call but I haven't been able to be consistent with any trumpet, I can email pics if anyone interested.
I agree with Mike above. Richard makes an awesome Hen Box. I hunt this one.

Haven't got a pic, but the one that goes with me is snakewood/crabapple with some Kelly Puckett artwork. Second choice is a snakewood/teak. Both are fantastic sounding calls!!
Hunter what is your wood combo, look awesome

Bunch of great looking boxes!
Excuse my ignorance, but this thread has peaked my interest. What constitutes a box being called a "hen box"? And is there a advantage/disadvantage to them? Thanks

Richard explained to me that his "hen box" is actually a hybrid between a turpin and some other call (he has a southern accent and I'm from N.J. so I'm not sure what that other style is). I'm not sure if the "hen box" is of his design or if that's a type that he adopted and put his spin on...
Maybe someone here with more knowledge about that design could chime in...Or maybe Richard will see this and enlighten us...
Here's my new addition, a Richard Hudson bloodwood over English walnut. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170604/a2b00396b3761553d912301cc29a631c.jpg)

Very nice! Did you make that?

To my understanding the Turpin hen box included the handle on the box has or so has the tophat included in the lid. I havent had the pleasure to see nor run many orginal Turpin call (old ones). I have been told by a couple people that have orginal boxes that the boxes i build is different than others. ie. Radius, Running style, Lid Radius. They run slimlar to a long box with the yee yalk of a Tupin style calls. They do run different than other calls but if you take the time to learn how they run and what can be done with then , well the picture speak for the calls.
