Title: Fall Turkey
Post by: ChiefBubba on May 23, 2017, 04:37:55 PM
Just watched a thing on TV on fall turkey hunting with dogs at Turkey Trot. Anyone been there or have tried it other places? That's a bucket list hunt for me. Bubba

I've never actually tried it but I am with you.  Definitely on my turkey hunting goals list.

My deer hunting group used to do fall dog hunts.  Shot a lot of hens that way years ago (legal in IA in the fall).  The two best dogs are long gone and the group is too busy these days, but the memories are great. I Actually killed my 1st bird 25+ years ago hunting over dogs.

Iowa has allowed dogs for Fall turkey hunting since 2005. Only 10 states allowed dogs during Fall turkey hunting 25+ years ago.

I have never been to Turkey Trot, but they have a great reputation. A friend of mine, Kevin Evans, runs Turkey Ridge Raquette guide service and hunts fall turkeys with dogs, he's in NY also. I have a dropper that I trained myself to hunt fall turkeys, it's a lot of fun. I've pretty much given up bow hunting for deer since I got my pup.
