Post by: High plains drifter on May 21, 2017, 01:18:38 PM
I have a question. What are the tactics of hunting turkey in ythe fall? I've only gotten a few in the fall, and I snuck on them.

A lot of guys locate a flock, scatter them, and call them back in.  That's the typical fall scenario.  I myself prefer to scout extensively and just hunt them in the intel I gather.   Mostly deer hunting them and calling to them from an area I have found they frequent.  If you can find a roost they are really habitual in the fall.  A lot of fun getting in tight on a fall roost!

Will the gobble, and come to a call, in the fall? Thanks for the input.

Yes they respond to calling in the fall. You will hear a lot more turkey vocalization in the fall. The thing to remember in the fall is you call like turkey to like turkey. Gobbler to gobbler, hen to hen. The short window in the spring breeding is when gobbler's are most susceptable to responding to hen vocalizations. Turkey's are always establishing their pecking order. They will come investigate the voice they hear in the neighborhood. As far as scattering technique works better IMO on hen's and the young of the year. Generally they roost in larger groups it easier to get them to scatter in a few different directions. They will start trying to regroup shortly after they hit the ground. If you scout a area and know roost area's and feeding areas will be a big help to you. :z-twocents:

Bust them up! Once you start calling watch out!...they're coming in every direction. Lots of fun.

Yes they gobble in Fall. You can call them in and be more successful than busting them up.

Thanks for the info. I'm thinking about a black hills trip in the fall, or maybe a trip trying to get a turkey.I have come across turkeys while pheasant hunting, and they were always flocked up in big flocks. The gobblers were in their own little groups.

I'm thinking I might try for a fall bird up on the Missouri River. I'm going about it exactly the way I do in the spring I think.I might try a fan.The fall colors are amazing.
