Title: Going back to a Red Dot: My experience
Post by: lowoctane on April 28, 2017, 08:41:21 PM
Went to fiber optic rifle sights on my NEF
12ga single this year. I shot a 24.9lb rooster this year using Win LB 3X6X1.75.
Hit him at 30yds a little low and it picked him up and blew him back a bit so I knew my shot was low. Did lose some breast meat. Said all of this to say that if your gun shoots tight and you use sights, you may want to re-think those sights and consider optics of some sort.  :z-twocents:

It's not the sight that matters it's your point of impact.  I just use bead sights and don't lose any breast meat.

Much easier to stay on target when inches count shooting a Red Dot.  I have one gun that has a red dot on it and it is the only gun I would consider hunting with Win LB's. Shoots 220's-230's with Win LB 3" 6.

The sights can only hit what are pointed at. I saw no difference in accuracy between iron sights and a dot sight on my Turkey guns.

Huh. I threw myself on my sword to possibly help someone who might be on the fence with what sighting system to choose...

I used three dot fiber optics until bifocals came into my life and made that a poor option.  I'd rather not use anything with batteries, but my red dots have been good to me for several years now.  And they are great with kid hunters.

Imo after an extensive shooting session of one shot I realized they are the worst things on earth if you don't get good ones. Forget the Burris, aim higher. I'd think a scope is a way better option

I really like my Burris red dot. Mike

I currently have 4 Burris FF3's and they have all been flawless. I hunt with 2 other guys who use them also. No complaints from us and they have a great warrenty if something was to happen.

I use an Aimpoint 9000sc and it is the Cadillac of red dots in my opinion. Costs $400 though. Buy once cry once.

Aimpoint H1 is about as ideal as one can get. Compact , light and super tough.

I think the H1 came out after I bought mine a few years ago. it is an awesome looking sight!

If you pull low with open sights then you could do the same with a dot or a scope. An optic isn't going to make you keep from pulling your shot.

Never missed with open sights. Can't say the same about the red dot. I was at fault though and still prefer the dot.
