Do I need to pack the snake boots for Kansas??? We are leaving May 3rd and will be hunting around hays. I live and hunt in Louisiana so I never go in the turkey woods without my snake boots. I have a pair of danners and they are comfortable but really hot. If I can get away with lighter boots I will.
no need.
I would suggest full body armor.
We saw Prairie Rattlesnakes. Pretty cool snake and seemed pretty docile. I just wore the same rubber boots I wear here in SC.

I went to Kansas last year and wore my knee high Lacrosse rubber boots and had no problems. Even the guides wore low top hiking style boots for comfort, but it's your call. I would say it's no need IMO.
If their with in 100 miles of me I would have them on!!
Naw you don't need them, but you better pack some extra toilet paper....

sure make alot of racket!
They are ornery cusses for sure, and ya wouldn't want to get bit just cuz of infection, but they re nice to have around - they are hell on rodents.

Infection????? Seriously?? I have been bitten by hundreds of snakes over the years and never once had an infection from any of them. I use to breed, raise, and catch snakes for many years.

I've hunted and scouted KS hard on the eastern part of the state the last three years. I've only ran across a couple black rat snakes the area I hunt. I was scouting some Rio ground in south central KS area, heard a rattle and slowly backed up and stayed away from that property. I raise and breed boa constrictors but have no interest in messing with wild snakes, escpecially venomous ones. I'd say bring the boots just to be careful if you're hunting the central to western part of the state. If you're on the East side I'd pack for comfort as it won't be an issue.
I've hunted western KS every year for the past 10. I've stepped on a snapping turtle in the middle of an alfalfa field but I've never seen a venomous snake. Also been stung by a bee.
I have hunted Kansas literally all over the state except the extreme western pajrt. This has been for the past 17 years.
In that time I have had one encounter with a venomous snake and it just about got my kid. I was moving along a creek bed along a,losing stream and making a move on some field birds. Wasn't worried at all about snakes because I had convinced myself there were no snakes to worry about in Eastern Kansas ( I was raised in south Louisiana) I about passed out when I saw that all too familiar white mouth fly open next to my kids leg.
Yep. Big Ole water moccasin.I pulled my kid back and the snake took off.
So....moral to the story is that you are far less likely to have problems in Kansas compared to other areas, but it is still a good idea to keep your eyes open
Just got back from Kansas. Didn't see any snakes. Still wore knee length rubber boots like in VA. Seen dozens of snakes at home and on travels. Usually just steer clear: they won't chase you. One thing you should always do is watch where you sit. Also take care where you put your hands when getting up. Snakes like warm bodies and are attracted.
Should google snake bite treatment to be prepared for the worse. In any case get to the nearest ER as calmly and quickly as possible. Try not to freak out as you want your heart rate to stay low. Seen dozens of snake bites when I worked in a Level 1 Trauma center. Rattle snake bites are horrible. Won't go into more detail.
Have never used them, hunt there every year multiple times.
Thanks fellas. Prolly will just wear my snake boots. I know I will find every rattle snake in the state if I don't.
I have lived and hunted in NE KS all my 33 years. I have never encountered a venomous snake while hunting.
I have killed a few on roads though.

You just got to be quicker than the snake!

Goodnight bugman you have them covered for sure!
Looks like bugman got the slam ....... rattlesnake, cottonmouth, and copperhead.
I live in eastern KS. I've been struck at twice by rattlesnakes. Nearly stepped on a copperhead one day. Another time almost sat on a copperhead. Old coworker of mine got bit on the finger 2 years ago and nearly lost his hand. A current coworker has been bit twice and said all it rides to him is make him real sick. I responded as an EMT when hit got bitten another time but luckily it didn't penetrate his boot. Last week we had a rattler at work that had climbed 5ft of fence. It found a hole in the door frame. They took a picture with its rattle hanging out and head just inside the opening.
We have a few timber rattlers but most are Massassagua rattlers. They don't rattle very loud.
I ran across some type of rattler in southern KS several yrs ago. Don't remember exactly where but it was prairie country and he was an angry little fellow when I stopped and took some pics of him.

He might want to think about changing his name to snake man if he keeps after them like that.
Kids basketball goal blew over in these 60 plus mph winds. This fella was underneath.

Welp, there are definitley snakes in KS! Hate 'em.
Don't know squat about Kansas, except that I would like to hunt pheasants there. But I have lived in snake country (Georgia) most of my life. We used to have rattlesnake round ups in South Georgia for a Reason. I would like all poisonous snakes and spiders to be rare, very rare. Let the non/poisonous critters take up the slack. I nearly sat down on a non-poisonous snake about 10 yrs ago when turkey hunting. Could have been bad if it had been a different snake. I do my part to make them scarce and do not apologize to the politically correct crowd for doing so. I live and hunt in snake country, and so do my kids.

I never eat'em raw with the skin on like that. They are better cooked and with the skin off. :toothy9:
On our front porch today. Wife stepped over it initially and my daughter was standing 4 ft from it when the wife saw it. I had been hunting and my daughter met me as I walked up from the pasture. Wife has the .270 out and was gonna shoot it. Glad I came back when I did.

Yep, suspect that 270 would have done the trick: especally on concrete :TrainWreck1:
