Title: I Need a New Gun
Post by: Matt74 on April 14, 2017, 10:12:52 AM
I just sent in my MB 935 to be repaired. The pusher assembly broke after shooting 13 rounds of 3 1/2's out of a lead sled. I took it apart to give it a deep clean and proceeded to take top gas cap and spring off. Big mistake, it has to be put back in with a press. Sent it back to MB and it's going to be 6-8 weeks before its back. Season will be over by then. I have a 835 borrowed for now but I need a new turkey gun.
The guns I'm considering are the Winchester SX3 Long beard, Winchester SXP, Benelli Supernova, and the Mossberg 835. The most important attribute I'm looking for is reliability, followed by function (how well it patterns), and third is lightweight and how easy it is to shoot. I'm leaning toward SX3 LB or the supernova.

IMO you have had two of the best turkey guns in your hands, the 935 and the 835!  13 rounds of 3 1/2's in a lead sled is going to be BRUTAL on just about any gun.  The recoil has to go somewhere.

I see your point, but I don't think plastic has any place inside of a shotgun. I'm not knocking MB but that will be the last 935 I own.

Have you ever checked the recoil tables to see what a 3 1/2" can generate, even compared to a .375 H&H or .458 Winchester Magnum, maybe the sled is a no-no, I've never used one for a shotgun.

Matt, You've got my interest up on this.  Is this the ammo tube push assembly and spring we are talking about?  Curious?  Maybe Clark can shed some light on this subject.

Best thing you can do is get you a youth Rem. 20 gauge 870 with 21 inch barrel and Trulock Choke 565 , and couple boxes of Federal HW 7... and you can thank me later...you will not regret building the gun...

No it's the plastic pusher assembly that pushes the bolt back. Its got two metal push rods attached to it. It jammed upon to the tube spacer and split the plastic. That was a $20 fix. It's MY fault that I took the top of the gas system apart and couldn't get it back together.
Again I'm not trying to bash MB, their customer service dept has been great and is going to fix the gun under warranty. I shot the 835 out of the lead sled today and had zero problems. I just don't think I need a autoloader for a turkey gun. To many things that can break. So just simply from a reliability standpoint my replacement shotgun will be a pump action. Trying to decide between a MB 835, Win SXP Long Beard, or a Benelli SuperNova.
Thanks

Thanks for the explanation Matt.  I didn't know about the plastic in the bolt area.  I agree, no plastic in that area.  A magnum gun that shoots 3 1/2" shells with the high recoil of most turkey loads shouldn't have plastic in the receiver.  I've owned an 835 for about 10 years with no problems.  All I've shot is 3 1/2's in her.  Good Luck with your choice.
