Title: small frame mouth calls
Post by: jtg88 on April 06, 2017, 10:28:23 PM
Anybody got any recommendations on small frame mouth calls?  I've got a very high, narrow palate and the regular sized calls just won't seat close enough to the roof of my mouth to work properly.  I've got a couple of Hook's calls that I love but it's a pretty limited selection in the small frame calls. So far, they're all raspy and I can get loud on them but I'd like a call with less rasp for softer, clearer notes when needed.

I too am palate challenged and found that a phone call or email to some call makers and they will gladly press whatever call they make in the small frame. What I've experienced is not all call tapes are created equal.
I'm running a Houndstooth calls and Tom Teaser.

Best of luck to you.

If the Hooks calls fit you, then buy any larger taped call that you like and use the Hooks as a template and trim the excess tape.  This way your not limiting yourself to only small taped calls.

I can't speak for the O.P. but for me it's not that simple. The tape isn't the issue, it's the frame. the frame of standard adult mouth calls are too wide and won't allow for a tight, comfortable seal in the roof of my mouth.

Oh I'd call Lyle at houndstooth see what he can do. If you feel like a lot of calls have too much "backbone" and want to run loud and raspy with lots of pop try houndstooth I find he builds a lot of calls a little more subtle.

I'm in the same boat.  I've recently started using Woodhavens small frames and love them.

Exactly right!  I can trim a regular sized call all day long but the frame itself is what is too wide to allow a good seal.  I'll have to try some of these recommended. Thanks.

Flip the call upside down and it takes the rasp out.
