I'm headed to SD and WY in May, and I'm going to get a new box for the trip. I need some suggestions on long or short boxes specifically for Merriams
Turkey is a turkey if you know how to run a box it will call in any turkey. What do you have already?
Just my $.02 but Merriam's, Rios and Gould's will all come a long, LONG, LOOOOONG way to a call.
I always said I like my box call for those 3 to be able to be heard "twice as far away as I can hear the bird gobbling back".
My go-to would be something along the lines of a purpleheart over mahogany longbox.......
I had a real nice Spring Creek long box I got from Mike here last year. It worked great in the Pine Ridge hills of Nebraska last year and in Kansas. I think it's a bloodwood over poplar and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend his calls to anyone, especially for the money.
Something LOUD. You will likely trying to strike a gobble from a good distance, and chances are you'll be fighting the wind at times as well. Don't be too concerned with pitch and rasp as they aren't nearly as picky on that as would an eastern. A loud glass or crystal pot call works too. I'd hit my glass call so loud it would make my ears ring at times out there. :z-dizzy:
I plan to just carry a few loud calls.. a Frank Kruer bloodwood/black limba longbox that can reach the high notes and an SS yellowheart/mineral poplar shortbox that just screams
Thanks for the replies. I spoke with Mike at Spring Creek this morning and we've got something in the works.

I have one of these calls and it works great in KS and WY. I carry three different sounding box calls and use the one that gets them them gobbling.

You won't be disappointed with Mike's calls. SD is a state that has some Great Merriam hunting. Good Luck getting your White tip. ENJOY the EXPERIENCE!!!!
