Well this could be a novel with the hunt i had yesterday morning, but ill try and keep it short........
im able to hunt 650 acres of dominion power property since im a police officer to keep the local poachers off. ive been listening to these birds before the season and every morning they were in the same spot. well like always opening morning they werent in the same spot except for a big bird that has been covered up with hens. after waiting for the bird to hit the ground i slipped down some four wheeler trails and was pleasently greated with after my first series of calls by three gobblers in the bottom and the big boy.....the three that were together gobbled their heads off, but wouldnt come up the ridge and one the big boy gobbled they went away. after they went away i was able to slip the rest of the way down the ridge and get into the bottom where all the birds have been. after getting set up i made some calls and NOTHING, i knew they hadnet seen me, so after about 5 minutes of being silent the 3 amigos gobbled on their own about 300 yards away on the other side of the power line, so i angled my calls that way and sure enough GOOOOOOOBLE, right in front of me in the direction of the big gobbler with the hens, i let it get quiet again for a minute or two and called again and this time he and another gobbler with him let out another gobble only 60 in front of me....so the red dot came on and the safety came off. sure enugh a couple seconds later the full fan announced his arrival along with his buddy. i watched this gobbler for the next hour strut with some hens and and his buddy. well while watching these birds the birds across the power line were going absolutely NUTS!!!!! after the big boy and his friends went out of sight and he gobbled, i quickly slipped out of there and headed towards the gobbling birds across the power line...once across the power line i quickly realized the gobbling birds were the three amigos that had been gobbling earlier, well needless to say after about 20 minutes of being in their comfort zone away from the big boy they marched right in and i picked out the unlucky one and let the mossburg tactical turkey eat........10 inch beard, 1 inch spurs, 15 lbs (but i can see why he was so skinny, the ridges on this property are unbelievable) the first day hunting new property and we got meat on the ground.....and monday moring ill be waiting for the big boy bright and early to settle some unfinished business...
