Title: Lockjaw Gobblers
Post by: RussM311 on March 20, 2017, 03:42:40 PM
At the end of last season, the area I hunt had at least 6 nice gobblers left...  and they had gobbled all season long. Fortunately, I was able to convince a couple of their buddies to come in real close.  The problem is....  our season starts this Saturday, and we haven't heard a single gobble during our scouting sessions.  This morning seemed to be the perfect morning....  and nothing...    Any idea what the heck is happening??   We have birds on our cameras, so we know birds are still around.  Looks like a long quiet season....  :-(((

If you have them on camera and know they're there then they just ain't feeling it.   It will bust loose at some point.

When we're they on camera? Do you have good nesting areas? Are you in MO? They probably got shot by coyote hunters with AR's according to some.

I am hoping they will break loose sometime soon, but we never know. Talking with other area hunters, it seems that all of the birds are being quiet for some reason.  And no, I am in Louisiana, and we do very little coyote hunting.... mostly just targets of opportunity during other seasons.  Going to miss MO this year due to one of our hunters scheduling some surgery at the wrong time, so maybe the birds will recover before I head up next year.

Birds are still not talking much in this part of Missouri.  Weather has been all over the place.  I'd just be patient if our opening day was tomorrow.  Last thing you want to do is stomp all over the woods opening day trying to get one to gobble when they dont want to yet.  When they aren't talking I just sit for an hour minimum and then move on.

Give them time. They'll open up. Like mentioned above, don't go tromping through the woods and ruin a good place before they decide to start talking.
