Title: Cleaning gun at range while patterning
Post by: shedhunta on March 18, 2017, 10:41:13 AM
Getting ready to pattern my 870 20 gauge.  Trying to keep the amount of 4$ shells fired to a minimum.  Was going to get a bore snake to run through every shot or two but after researching I saw some not so good reviews.  What do you guys Recommend?

Thx

Bore snake does the job!  Quick, easy and efficient

You need to minimize any variables while patterning and hunting, and I have found that by passing the bore-snake 3 times from the breech to the muzzle, I get the best shot to shot reproducibility.  You will notice a significant reduction in the effort required to pull the bore-snake through the barrel from the first to the third pass.  I do a thorough cleaning of the barrel and action after an extended patterning session.

x2 This is what I also do when patterning.

Bore snake for me. I agree with 3 passes between shots.

Not sure where you could find one but I use one of these https://www.midwayusa.com/product/690394/outers-tico-tool-shotgun-1-piece-cleaning-rod-12-16-gauge-35 for a quick cleaning and it works great.

Are you guys removing the choke before using the boresnake?

Run it dry with the choke in.

Agreed, I have four. Everyone seems freaked out about obsessive/compulsive cleaning of their shotgun. I cannot see where it makes that much difference. I clean mine after each session or hunt with the above mentioned cleaning rod and my patterns are great. Each to his own I guess.

I can't pull mine through with the choke in

You can clean it by removing your Turkey choke and then replacing it with a Modified or improved cylinder. Then just swab out your Turkey choke.
