Just curious as to what was the most popular loads were before hevi shot and longbeards?
Remington Duplex 4X6 copper was my favorite.
Winchester XX Magnums 2&1/4 oz #5

Winchester Xtended Range HD
My favorite was Winchester Supreme HV 12 ga. 3" 1 3/4 oz. and 3.5" 2 oz. #6 shot. They are still my favorites. Winchester changed the name to Double X but it's the same shot shell. They work very well. No reason to change IMO.
Winchester xX supreme #4s
Win Supremes, 5's & 6's...

Federal 3/2/6's 3/2/5's
Winchester XX 3" 5's and 6's. Several different ounce loads.
Before Hevi and LB we just called them inside 30yds and killed just as many turkeys back then as we do now.
Winchester Supreme 3" loaded in the red hull, 2 oz. #5.
Federal Premium 3" 2 oz. copper plated 6's. I thought these were the ticket! (killed quite a few birds with them)
Winchester supremes #4's.
Hard for me to remember what I shot back then, I started shooting hevishot back in 2004 when Remington was making it. I think they were Winchester supremes

I used win hv 3.5 5's,#4buck,ans 2's.
winchester extended range , still have 4 1/2 boxes :icon_thumright:
Federal premium 3 inch 2oz copper plated in both 5s and 6s.
One awesome lead load. I would still likely shoot them today if they still made them.
Activ, 3", 21/4 oz nickel plated 5's and 4's. I started shooting the Federal Tungsten-Iron then moved to the Remington "old green" HeviShot shells which produced great patterns. I killed a gobbler @ 3 years ago w/ the Activs, and had forgotten just how hard they kicked.
I was still shooting fed. premium 2 3/4" 6's thru a full choke in my 500 up until 2006 when I bought my 835. I then used hevi until 2013 until I found a hell of a deal on 3.5" Win HV 5's at wally world so now they are my favorite. Still have quite a few and shoot Win XX 3" 5's thru my 500 now also.
the old Federal premium 3" 2oz 5's and Winchester XX 3" 2oz 5's
Federal Premiums
Federal Premium 3in 6's pre flite control wad and Winchester HV 3in #6
3.5" Win XX #5s and #6s
3.5" #4 Federal Grand Slam
I lament the day they quit the pre flight control wad Federal 3-2-6 Premium. I have a very small stash left. Out of my 835/ .676 Stardot it threw a perfect even pattern that would wreck any gobblers world.
Mossberg 835 and a StarDot .676
Federal premium 3-2-7.5's
Killed a pile of gobblers with them over many years...but they don't work on todays armor plated birds :-X
Winchester 3 inch Double X 2oz of buffered copper-plated #6. Killed a pile of turkeys with this load. I picked up some LB's to pattern this year so will see how they stack up to the XX's.
Factory ammo hasn't interested me since the late 80s..We always used nickeled lead # 5s or 5x6s from Ray and Sandy at Nitro. I honestly have lost count of how many gobblers I killed with those shells through my Mark Bansner custom choked 11-87 that micced at .642 at the bore.. A fair pile for sure. No dat.
Winchester Supreme HV
The old Federal 3-2-7.5s and Win HV 3.5-2-6s, depending on which gun I was using.
Federal 3-2-6 out of a smith and Wesson pump with a 28in full choke that my dad left me with about four boxes of federals ran out and retired the gun
federal premium 3"-2oz-4s
In a 12 gauge it was the old Remington duplex 4x6's. Killed a lot of birds with that old load. With a 20 gauge it was the nitro 4x5x7's.

My favorite was Winchester Supreme HV 12 ga. 3" 1 3/4 oz. and 3.5" 2 oz. #6 shot. They are still my favorites. Winchester changed the name to Double X but it's the same shot shell. They work very well. No reason to change IMO.
I mostly use longbeards now, but if I was hunting thick woods, I would use the Supremes/xx 1 3/4 oz 3" also, spreads enough I don't have to adjust poa

Winchester Xtended Range HD
Yep. #6s. I still have 7 rounds left. Best factory round I ever shot prior to Mag Blends.
Killed a bunch of birds with Winchester XX 3" #6. Loved those.
Winchester Supreme and Federal Grand Slam, mostly #5s, were my favorite in both 12 & 20 ga.
Whatever shells dad had on tap were fine so long as I was carrying a shotgun.

Winchester Supreme #5 and #6
I'm an old fart and never even heard of hevi-shot or some of these other loads that seem to be popular now days until I joined this forum a few days ago. I've just always used high brass 4 or 6 lead shot. Usually Remington or XX Winchester.
I have an old model 12 Winchester 12ga with a 30" full choke barrel that my Grandfather bought new in 1926. Got passed down to my Dad and then to me. Not hardly any blueing left on it, it's about the color of an old nickel. It may not look like todays turkey guns but it's killed more of 'em than you could put in one pile.
I bought my "new" shotgun 27 years ago. It's a Remington 1100 20ga with a 26" barrel. It shoots a real good pattern with a full choke and has killed a whole lots of turkeys too. Wouldn't think twice about taking a 40 yard shot with it.
All that said, I don't like taking "Long Tom" (the model 12) away from the farm anymore and got the hankering for a new 12ga this year. Shot some of my kids and grandkids newer guns and settled on a Benelli SBE2 with a 26" barrel. Supposed to pick it up tomorrow!
Still have a few boxes of good 'ol lead 4's and 6's so if it will hold a pattern with those it may be a little while before I give these new fangled loads a try.
Win Supreme HV #4
Or the 3.5in federal #4s copper plated premium pre flight control wad.
Remington duplex 4x6 and Winchester hv #5. Also used Remington premier #5. (Back when they were dark green with black brass).
Remington 4x6, Remington 3" 5's in 3.5"with 4's. 2 3/4" gun shot Remington express 2 3/4" 6's .
Later the Federal grand slam loads in 3.5" 4's.
20 gauge Federal grand slam 5 and 6's
Federal Premium 2oz 4s and 5s.
Still have some and shoot them occasionally. Those 4s are bad!

Same here
Still sitting on some older goodies. Them fiocchis will rattle your skull not much on pattern board tho. I'm surprised nobody mentioned activ shells with the all plastic hull. Them things were pretty darn good.

I snatched these up today at a local pawn shop. The win XR's are my all time favorite but I couldn't pass up a box of the old grand slam federals.
