I've never been a slate guy...only own one slate, a lonzo Birdseye, and it's just very subtle and soft sounding to me. That said I want to give slate another try and see if there is one out there I may like more. I've always been a glass/crystal guy and think I may just not have a ear for slate. Tell me what yalld go with!
Any opinions on the hanks Osage slate?

bingo. dont think you can get much better.
For a little more mellow sounding slate, Eddie Wynnes persimmon slate. For crisper sounding call, Paul Platz cherry slate is hard to beat.
I don't know. "Subtle and soft" sounds pretty good to me!
My best Slate is the Halloran Wenge and Walnut slate. It doesn't run like a typical slate. More of a hybrid of slate and Crystal.
Derrick Stuckey makes a slate that's incredible. It runs like the Halloran W/W also. I would have bought it at the National Convention if I had enough funds left.

Recently got a Brad Roberts Walnut that will I will hunt this year.
In the past, a spring allure slate has served me well and a Lonnie Mabry ( they are a little harder to come by if you don't live local to him). The Halloran Wenge/Walnut is great also

x2, only slate I hunt with these days.
I dont have any of the ones mentioned above, but I have a
Lonnie sneed Hot Hen and Cane Creek Pro Custom slate, one or the other is allways in my vest.
Lonzo paduak slate over aluminum
Txage12, I too did not like slate calls at one time due to them sounding "subtle and soft". And yes that lonzo maple slate is "subtle and soft". I like a slate with some pop and volume like a glass call. lights out, cross road, derby city, glen marrer, Lonnie sneed, paul platz, .... are a few I think you would like the sound of. P.S. any of these calls can also sound "subtle and soft" by just wrapping your hand around them, holding them tighter and moving a little toward the rim or center with the striker.
Steve
If you are looking for a slate that sounds more like a glass then I think the Osage slate from hanks would be a good choice. I have the Lonzo Birdseye maple and the Hanks Osage. Both calls are equally good but just different. The Hanks Osage slate has more volume, and louder sharper cutts.
Pat Strawser makes the best slate I've ever played. Keystone Klassic Limited edition slate.

I like a slate to be soft but if you want one that sounds almost like glass i would recommend lights out slate over glass in quarter sawn white oak pot.
Lonnie Mabry cedar
I just got a Matt McLain Red Zebrawood and its awesome. Also if you can get ahold of one of Al Shoemakers [SS] Game Over slates you'll be very pleased. Been using one for a couple seasons, it'll call soft and it'll crank it up when you want. Kee kees good to. Not sure if hes still making any pot calls though.
I have got quite a few slates..but I bought a slate/aluminum pot from Lee this year (misfire) on the forum...cant remember what wood it is but this pot sings with a Lyman persimmon..its definitely going to see some hunting time
Wild talker game calls (mike battey)makes a killer slate. Just saying.

I believe Cody made them for Mike.
I went threw bunch of slates the last few years , best 2 so far laminate Halloran(don't think he makes anymore) and natural addiction zebrawood slate w/ his persimmon striker is money in the bank
Clint Corder all the way :smiley-char092:
My best slate is a Yellowheart pot made by Doug Morgan.
Wow that's a tough call,
Just a few of my favorites....Halloran laminated slate over glass, Scott Hock Quartersewn white oak slate over slate, Lyman Bocote slate over glass, Brad Roberts Red Cedar slate over slate.....but man there are so many good ones out there
I just got a Corder Osage slate/glass that is awesome. It jumped to near the top of the pack. It sounds a lot like a glass call.
Lee Chadwick Walnut slate or a Lonnie Sneed Hot Hen

Paul Platz or Lon Trice. Both awesome!
Lonnie Sneed Hot Hen is a great call.Only slate call that I've used for the past 4 seasons, I highly recommend it. I just got a Drop Dead Woodsman slate by Cody and it is also a great call! It sounds great, sweet soft talk and you can get really loud and aggressive with it and it doesn't skip a beat. Runs really consistent all the way around the call. The woodsman will be the first pot call out of my vest this season! Both Mr Sneed and Mr Zearing were a pleasure to do business with, great guys!
I have a lightsout quarter sawn oak, sneed hot hen, raspy boss, cornelius, and halloran wenge/walnut. I would say the halloran is my fav out of the bunch.
