Title: Tent/camping advice
Post by: littlebull on March 07, 2017, 09:41:35 AM
Looking at buying a tent that'll sleep at least three with good rain and mosquito protection. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Rich

Ya buy a camper..  Spent 20 years tent camping while turkey hunting in Missouri. No matter what I did it always managed to become a mess, with the rain and the mud and oh don't forget the wind.  And oh ya the mice also. After a year of 9 days of steady rain, it was no more tent for me.

Nothing like a good night sleep in a dry camper, and having all your stuff stay dry in a plus.

I much prefer a camper as well but I have camped in tents in the mountains. A tent can go places a camper can't but you aren't near as comfortable. If I were going to get a tent I would go with a Kodiak Flexbow.

yea campers and trailers are great ideas but I'm needing a tent bc we will be camping either on sand bars or the bank of the ms river. So campers/trailers out of the equation. probably be boating in

Treerooster,

That is pretty awesome. I bet you've got some pretty good memories over that span of time. That's really the reason I want to get into it is for the experience. Be able to go out on our place with my dad and brother. then hopefully get to do some traveling and camp on some public land that we hunt.

Well a wall tent maybe out of the equation too. A buddy and myself boated a wall tent across a lake in Colorado a few years back.

Be careful on that river in the spring, water levels can change quick sometimes.

Here's a simple 2 man Coleman, spent 2 weeks in it in Idaho year before last. It held up to high wind, snow and rain. It would pack in a boat easy and was pretty comfortable, just not a lot of room for hanging and drying clothes.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170307/49423622970c71e0ce5012a8e24b86ce.jpg)

I think insects are my primary concern. Being in the delta during the spring is a whole different ball game with mosquitos/gnats

I know exactly what some of you are talking about when rain and being wet are concerned.  I have been on hunts where it rained so hard all I could do was roll the tent up and throw it in the back of the truck with everything else.  My buddy has what we call the tenthouse suite (pictured).  But now if I am hunting solo and the weather is favorable.  I just put over the back of the truck to keep the dew off and sleep in the bed of the truck on an air mattress.  If its hot I have a two man tent that works well.

You need to know that their "persons" capacity is way off on tents.  If you want three people in one, better get a six man.  You couldn't fit three kids in the typical three person tent.

 I was about to ask about that. As I was looking at the 3-4 man tents I was thinking to myself theres no way that me my brother and my dad would make it through a night in one of them

In Mo. for years camping during turkey season i have stayed in tents, truck with a camper shell, big Chevy Van and camper. I can tell you from all of these experiences a camper was by far the best. You have a way to lock stuff up and have a lot better place to get out of the weather..We have to remember we have a lot of dishonest people in this world that just want to steal...In our last few years of camping with a tent setup one of us would always have to hunt close to camp...With a camper we could feel a little safer...

This is true, tents are much smaller than they claim.  Go to Gander Mountain, they have a half dozen or more set up on display right now.  I would multiply by at least two based on what I
saw at the Gander Mountain - can't see how two guys could be comfy in a four person tent - that would be marginal in my opinion.  Add a couple duffel bags with clothing, air mattress, etc.
and a six person tent would be tight IMO.  Go see them if you can.

I've been using a Hennessy Hammock for the past 2 years. For me it works because it's...
1. comfortable
2. quick and easy to set up
3. mobile and compact
4. great in wet stormy weather
5. did I say COMFORTABLE

I love the tent camping myself I look forward to the nest turkey camp as soon as I take it down. Rain can be annoying but we put up tarp and we can sit under and cook play cards or what ever and nothing beats a good warm fire on cool spring night. Also we don't really hunt evenings so can sit around cook up some good grub relax around fire unlike deer camp where your out huntig in PM
