Title: I've got a question
Post by: monty690 on February 13, 2017, 08:42:12 AM
Why can't you shoot a flute control wad through a ported choke? I guess that I don't understand the mechanics of ported chokes. Any insight is appreciated.

The FC wad was designed to do a certain job. Using a wad stripping choke offsets what the wad was made to do, or at least that's the theory. Some guys do shoot the 20 gauge loads thru ported chokes with great results, although most choke makers don't recommend it. I prefer non-ported and let the wad do its job.

Thank you for that. I contacted the choke manufacturers and they said about the same thing but went on to say that part of the wadding could get caught in the ports causing damage. I assume that the damage would come on the next shot fired.

I just always use Non-ported chokes, that way i don't have to worry about what shell i shot.. With the non- ported i don't have to worry about a stick or something getting stuck in one of the holes ...

Federal actually has a notice on the shell boxes that recommends that you not use ported chokes. I don't believe that the ports would actually catch and hold the wad, but they can hinder the wads progress and prematurely separate it from the shot. The design of the FlightControl system relies on the wad remaining with the shot after leaving the barrel and "slowly" pulling away from it through the braking fins at the back of the wad. It artificially creates a 25 yard pattern out of a 40 yard shot.

There are a number of choke manufacturers that have tubes created specifically for shooting the Federal FC shells.

When I tried a couple in a ported tube they did catch in the ports and mangle the wad .
I think the designee of the forward flaps actually catch in the ports ,and performance was very poor.
