Title: Weatherby sa459 factory choke
Post by: sevetts on February 11, 2017, 11:40:24 PM
It was a beautiful day and I had to shoot my new toy today. I was very pleasantly surprised by the factory choke, I'm not sure il buy anything else. These are really cool guns and all the reviews are right they are pure turkey machines. I thought I would get another 20 but I had absolutely no need for another 20ga and I was surprised when comparing the 12 and the 20 at how little wieght difference there was between the 2 so I went with the 12. It really is awesome. It was 75° today in southern MO and windy. All patterns were in at least 15mph so I'm pretty excited. Fed heavy 7s, federal heavy 6s, win extended range 6s, turkey thug 5s. If it's calm tomorrow I may shoot a few more but il probably wait on my dot to come in.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170212/b1837b9acf1055f4d0d4be72a5a16e1a.jpg) turkey thug 25yrds

Federal heavy 6s, may not look like much but I was pretty excited, 100 of these should destroy a bird.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170212/1d26c6df853f190eab03118884f206ac.jpg)

I have seen some remarkable patterns with those guns with a sumtoy choke, your pattern looks good but I would definitely try a sumtoy that seems to be the perfect combo with longboards from what I've seen. I have even thought about selling my Benelli and buying one these guns with a sumtoy lol.

Those are some nice patterns with the HW7s and the ext range #6s! I'd hunt those ext range#6s all day. I'm sure you could up your numbers with a better choke but the decision is up to you as to whether 20-30 more pellets in a 10" circle is worth the spent $$$. And yes those HW #6s will absolutely crush a gobbler, or a goose,or even a coyote if needed!

Yea I know I could do better with several options but I was mainly posting the patterns for a general refernce. You don't see many factory choke pattern pics unless they have tss coming out of them but this is a pretty good one. Good enough I really don't "need" a choke for it which really surprised me. I am really curious about the trulock fed 7 choke for this gun. If I could get 180+ with the federal 7s at 1300fps that would be MEAN, i know what the 20's do. Heard some really good things about that trulock choke and longbeards too.

I cut a couple 2×4s and hammered them in the ground and screwed an old piece of plywood to them, then used wrapping paper for every shot. Worked fine till I shot the heavywieght 6s, it blew my plywood off and one of my 2xs over.... I would not want those coming at me I know that. I've had a box of 10 of the 12ga heavywieght 6'sfor a long time but never shot one.

I hear a lot about the chokes people are using for the 20 gauge. What are the top recommendations for the 12 gauge? I plan on shooting Hevi-13 3" #7. I keep telling myself I am going to use the box of Longbeard #5 shells I have but when I go to the store when it is close to the season I go into a daze and walk out with more of the to damn expensive Hevi-13. Is there a good overall choke I could use for both loads?

Let William at Sumtoy know you have a Weatherby Sa-459 and what shells you will be shooting. My SA-459 with a Sumtoy and LB 5's and 6's was nasty.

I just got my sa-459 12 guage last night, along with my sumtoy choke, I installed my ff3 on it and am hoping to shoot tmmrw evening if weather is good and I am able. I have not shot gun at all yet. I will try to post pics of my patterns going to dial in ff3 with my dove loads and shoot a couple turkey loads all 3" long beard 6 shot, hevi 13 6s, hevi magna blend 2oz, maybe a federal supreme 5.

Moved my dot to the right a hair and put it up. I think I'm gonna call it good, I'm happy with that pattern for that shell. Just need a sling

My gun has the win choke, browning investor threads. I have a sumtoy .650 to try in it today. GOD HAS BLESSED THIS OL BOY. I was in a bad accident 12/05/15 and wasn't able to bow hunt because it messed my shoulder and neck up. I have recovered enough to shoot bow again so going today to pickup my new Mathews halon 32/ 7 inch brace. Going to try to get my first bird with a bow this year too. But hoping to take some guys who have never killed a bird is why I want 2 guns setup this year. An older man got me hooked on this hobbie that I love and I want to pass it along!

I put a claw sling on mine, fit well and seems to be the trick, only real field testing will prove that.

I wish they had released the 32 last year. I probably would have bought it instead of my defiant 34. Don't get me wrong the D34 is a great bow but the halons just feel a tad better all around to me. The string angle prevented me from buying one last year.  I need to get my first shotgun turkey before I even think about a bow turkey. Please keep us updated on your choke and shell combos!

I will bud, yeah I shot bowtech since 2010, had a bunch of em: destroyer 350, invasion, insanity, experience, assassin, prodigy, boss. After last year and all their limb problems I lives the reign 7 but couldn't bring my self to buy one. I've also had elites energy 32, and 35. Also Hoyt carbon Spyder 30, and Mathews chill r and chill x. So I shot them and I narrowed it down between the bowtech reign 7 and the halon 32 so I went Mathews better price and better limbs I hope. All the top line bows are so good that it makes it hard.

I agree get you a bird with your gun first, boy I got tore up on my first one don't think I woulda been able to draw on him lol. I still get tore up just seeing a hen or a Jake. And hey don't be ashamed to get you a Jake for your first bird it's what I killed and you woulda thought I'd shot 50 lb, 6 inch spurs, 22 inch beard world record haha. I just enjoy being outdoors praise God for the privelage.

OK here's a quick shoot, wind is bad today but wanted to shoot I almost have ff3 dialed in on sa-459 this is a long beard 1 7/8 3 inch 5 shot at 20 yards. It's a tad low due to I pulled a bit low. Still getting ff3 dialed in. Just wanted Yall to see progress this is out of a .650 sumtoy

OK guys here is at 40 yards I don't do the whole count the dots in the circle but this is an extremely dirty barrel at 40 yards with magna blend 3" 2oz 5,6,7 I like the pattern myself maybe half a click to left and half click down and she's dead center the center yellow square was where I was aiming. It's a dead turkey at 40-50

Your Weatherby patterns looks good, too, sevetts.  Do you think that the Carlson choke performed that much better than your stock choke?

#5 3" long beards were decent patterns at 40, same with magblends and hevi 13 6s I got to jerking my gun a bit because recoil got to me when I went to shooting a few turkey loads. Wind was horrible and shoulder got sore I got red dot close, I cleaned gun and going to do some more shooting on hopefully a calmer day ( hopefully next Saturday) also want to play with my encore a bit more) #5 Winchester double x performed the best in my opinion. And cheaper!

Yes and no. That pattern got thrown away before I really got to take a picture but it is a very good heavywieght pattern if you look at it close. It's just right some. The factory choke shot extended range 6s better than the carlson. I'm gonna put the factory choke back in and see if the 2 chokes shoot the same poi, if they do il just pick a load and choke and switch them when I feel froggy. I hope it works that way but if it dosent il take the federal 7s and the carlson. My gun has mobile threads and the factory choke is ported, I have no idea on the exit diameter.

Just changed back to the factory choke and an extended range 6 and it was perfect. I'm really excited I can just switch chokes and loads and they are both good to go, same impact. Pic is factory with extended after red dot has been dialed in(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170227/b50be0e8a4803a92eeee525335b4dc05.jpg)

I gave up on mine Saturday wind was ripping and after getting ff3 close my shoulder got sore and I got terrible trigger flinch! I have to work on it again going to start at 50 ft with dove loads and see where it's at. I really like the Winchester super x 5shot 3", and the 3" 2oz magna blends. Both threw hunting patterns at 20-40. I only shot.my 11-87 12 guage twice Saturday with just the factory bead 26" barrel. Dead on POA/poi  with sumtoy .650 and magna blend 5,6,7 3" 2oz load it was beautiful shot once at 20 said wow, shot it at 40 said woooooooooow. Cleaned it and put it back in safe lol. Got to get the weatherby dialed in I live the pattern just got to get red dot zeroed. I have thought about selling my sa-459 12 guage or trading it for a 20 guage gun. The recoil is just too much for my shoulder.
