Title: Doubles!!
Post by: MK M GOBL on February 08, 2017, 07:30:23 PM
So I have started doing seminars again for the year this past weekend and will conducting them until the last weekend in March, on a "Learn to Hunt" come April 1st :)

So during part of one of the 2 seminars I was talking about Doubles on birds and how to score on these opportunities. After the seminar 2 guys came up to talk to me about a hunt they had last spring and how they "doubled" on toms. I was listening to the story and the guys connected on 2 birds a half hour apart, the second bird had been gobbling while they were working this first bird and killed after the first guys bird was down.

This didn't really go along with the topic within the seminar, but always like a good story.

So what do you consider a Double?

For me it is taking 2 toms/birds at the same time, may not be an exact 1..2..3 but as long as the birds are taken basically at the same time.

We have had a number of doubles over the years, whether it be with a buddy or as a solo.

This spot has produced many doubles in the past 8 years!!

I've killed a few doubles (two in one shot or bang bang).

I'd say a true double happens either at the same time or within seconds. Killing birds a half hour apart in dif sets or not I'd say is just killing birds the same day

Same time.  By choice the last time I doubled was in 2002.   It resulted in 82" of beard between the two turkeys.  56" and 26".

I'd say same setup, one shot 2 birds, boom boom 2 birds down,or even shoot one he was with a buddy and you call the other one back within seconds or a minute or so and get him. I would call what happened to them both tagging out the same day. Imo...

Have done that as a solo!! Had 3 toms come in and only one left :)

These birds were tanks!! and in the same spot as the other double I posted.

A few details on these longbeards :) Bird on the left #1 weighed in at 28lbs 4oz / 1 1/8" spurs / 11 3/4" beard and #2 was 26lbs 2oz / 1 1/8" spur (the other was busted up) / 10 5/8" beard. YUP!!!

If you go to a bar and order a double you get two shots in one glass.  Doesn't matter how long it takes to drink it. I think a double is two simultaneous birds requiring more than one shot. I think they have another term for two birds with one shot.

Yep...done that 3 times in my hunting career!

Went bang, bang 3 times as well, but I don't consider that a double.

A double to me is 2 birds in the same hunt but the best kind is 2 at once. I've only done it once and was during the fall. I filmed him shoot one and then dropped the camera and I shot one. Was my first fall longbeard.

Are you saying you killed 2 birds in one day? In Tennessee...

Doubled with my brother. Both of us shot at exactly the same time. Each got a rope and we never knew the other even shot until we each got up and ran to flopping bird. Wild!

I killed two with one shot (by accident) back in the early 1990s.  Was drawn down on one gobbler with my single shot and another ran up behind him when I dropped the hammer. Both went down like bowling pins.  I tagged one and the land owner tagged the other, which I gave him, as the second bird would have put me over the limit.

I've had many chances when a second bird came in after I killed one, but we're restricted to one gobbler per day here in N.C..

Four years ago I killed a gobbler on opening day, then got on the radio and called my best friend (who was hunting across the field at the same farm) to come over to my area in hopes another gobbler might be in the area.  About 45 minutes later, I called in two birds and my best friend killed his first double bearded gobbler, while the other one got to walk.  My best friend had hunted that farm for decades and never killed a single bird from that side of the property until that morning. Great memories.

I consider a double to be 2 birds simultaneously or within a min of each other.  I have never been able to kill two birds at one time, but I have done a 1,2,3.... bang with a buddy.  Between that occurrence and the hunt leading up to the kill it was definitely a memorable one.

Double for me I guess is two with one shot, two before the smoke clears from the first shot or simply two from the same spot in a very short span of time. I have been very prone to shooting doubles when given the chance but have rethought it a bit since SC went to 3 tags last season. Guess I have been greedy and my foot has slipped a few times over the years. It's also lead me to think "why did I do that?" for a few seconds maybe while toting out 40ish lbs. of turkeys on a 2 mile hike back to the truck a few times. We've all laid down to rest at times on those long walks out.

Only double I've managed with one shot was a good many years back. Talk about walking in high cotton.

A double only counts when there is a count down and two birds drop at the end of it .  I have a couple buddies that can't count to three.

A few years ago, my buddy and I had a crazy double. We did the 1,2,3, BOOM and we both missed. The 4 toms jumped up to fly away and we both knocked birds out of the air on our second shots. Doubt I'll ever have another double like that again!

A double is when the old man that got me hooked on turkey hunting called 2 birds in and let me shoot and boom he shot as well and we killed 2 at the same time. It was an amazing first time turkey kill for me that I will never forget. Praise God for it!
