Title: Which shells?
Post by: RebelW on February 06, 2017, 02:53:10 PM
I've been shooting Long Beards and Magnum blends. Was wondering what you guys thought about the Heavy 7s compared to the other 2? I shoot a Remington 870 28" with a Indian creek

I would stick to the mag blends. The 7s are a great round but not sure you will gain anything by switching. If it is just an itch then scratch it

I like the 7's. More pellets can't be a bad thing imho.

The federals can be finicky pattern wise in the 12, so I would stick with what you already have assuming they work well.

Your talking the Hevi13 #7s right? I would shoot them over the Mags or LBs.

Mine shoots good with mag blends but you know how it's, lol.. Always looking for the "what if it's better"
And either the federal 7s or the hevi shot

I like the H-13 7s. I have shot a few MagBlends, but liked the #7 patterns better. With all the 3.5 Guns I own I always grab my 3in.Encore topped with a Nikon Turkey Pro. It's an easy 40yd combo with most my shots way under that. I thought about even trying the L.B.#6 1 7/8 3in. just for fun. I'd pattern the #7s. You never know until you pull the trigger...

My Mossy 835 loves the Hevi 7's.  300 plus at 40.  They hammer turkeys.  Most of my shots have been in the 20-25 yard range but I shot a bird at a lasered 38 yards in South Dakota a couple years back and when I pulled the trigger on that bird, it never moved.  No flop what so ever.  Most of my kills are that way with the 7's.  That .665 IC should shoot the 7's Great but the only way to see if they will is grab a box and head to the range.

The first time I shot a turkey with 7's I was surprised by the devastation. I shoot the 5,6,7 Mag Blends with confidence. Liked the pattern of the LB 6's 1 5/8 but they shoot 4" high and right with my setup. I will try the LB 6's 1 3/4oz if I come across a box.

If you go with the Federal 7s you will need to change that choke. Indian Creeks standard turkey chokes do the opposite of what the federal shell wads were intended to do.

If it were me, I'd be doing whatever I had to do to get the federal HW 7's to pattern in that gun. I've just found them to be better and more consistent in general. I should add that this is mainly in the 20 ga and I know that the wad in the 20 responds to chokes better than the wad in the 12's but still, I had better luck even in the 12. Just found the Hevi to be easier to find in 12 here so I went that route initially.

I know to not being asked of me but I'll chime in anyway. I use TSS 9's and won't be switching back anytime soon.

Trulock makes a choke specifically for Fed 7's. That choke will shoot Win LB"s fairly good.

I love the Hevi #7s better than the blend. They shoot great in my 11-87 and the amount of pellets is a big plus. They put a nice dense pattern on the target and the turkey.

I shoot TSS with an Indian Creek. If I was shooting the Federal shells I would start with Trulocks choke and go from there.

I know not what you asked but I prefer the Hevi13 6s to the 7s. Shot the 7s for years and had great patterns. The 6s patterned great as well (not as many holes in paper but good, killing/hunting patterns) so I switched. Had a few incidents of birds not being quite as dead as I prefer with the 7s. Maybe a fluke but happened enough that I switched.
