Title: What's your ride to get your gobbler??
Post by: wkyhunter on January 28, 2017, 01:12:08 PM
Thinking about starting to look for a new to me ride.
Currently have a truck (4x4, 180k miles 2003 GMC) and a old work car. Will probably keep the truck. I'm thinking about a smaller SUV to pull double duty replace work car and maybe out of state turkey hunting trips. A newer truck would be nice, but can't really justify the cost.
Looking for your suggestions/experiences.
Thanks!

This is my ride with 364,000 miles. 1991 model but bought it in 2012. (http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170128/91ecc27923d9aaa306787f332c8ef4e8.jpg)

Next truck will be a 4wd but I will probably stick with Toyota. This one has been good to me

I am a gmc/chevy guy myself. Had good luck with them. Bout to replace mine in a month or two. I hate the looks of a 4 door but I love being able to haul the family on vacation as well as throw my hunting stuff in the back and go. The company I work for gave me a truck for work so my personal truck doesn't rack up many miles Cept on weekends and during hunting season. My last one has lasted ten years and I now have 108,000 miles on it. Been a good truck and I kinda hate to see it go. That being said I had an early 2000's blazer that made a heck of a hunting rig. The 4.3 vortech motor was a great one.

2007 model Chevy Z71 LTZ 4 wh. drive , with 59,000 miles ...Bought it brand new...i've always had 4 wh. drives after paying that extra, to get 4 wh. drive , good truck...  If your going to ride in style you don't worry about gas mileage....

I was in your place a  couple years ago.  I did the Jeep Patriot shown below. AWD and still gets 27-29 on the road and 23-25 in the city. I got the Sport 2.4L motor and the 6 speed auto and crank windows. The cold weather package came with 17" alloy wheels,  off road tires and tow hooks. Under 20k new.

A 2003 Toyota Tacoma.  Bought it new and have 145,000 miles on it.  This truck has been awesome.  I change the oil every 3000-5000 miles, changed the front brakes and at 120,000 I did the water pump, hoses, thermostat, belts and anti-freeze.  The paint and body are in really good condition so I hope to drive it for many more years.  I would definitely look at Toyota if I were in the market for another one.  She has been to Florida (2), Wisconsin (2 and drawn for this spring as well) and here in NC for turkeys.

2000 Dodge Dakota x-tended cab 4X4.
285,000 miles worth of screaming fury, my daughter named it " the red jet "
It's been all over the country 2 or 3 times, has hauled a ton of game and the bed is permanently coated in dried deer blood.
It's been a great ride, still has all the bells n whistles, I did put a fuel pump in it in '08 and a radiator last summer....the magnum V8 will still bust most cars from a dead stop !

97 Chevy s10. Been a decent truck but nothing I'm super attached to. It's 4wd with manual transmission. Again, I like it but not married to it. Has 178k miles on it and shows no sign of stopping but I'd like something a touch bigger for hauling the wife and kids when the time calls for it. Only good thing about not being able to haul the family, if my buddy wants to smoke a cigar in the truck I just ask him if he's got 2. The short, narrow wheel base also lets me get it into places many guys wouldn't consider taking their full size rigs but then that's what ATV's are for. I'd like a 4 door Tacoma ultimately but not right now.

1997 F-250 Power Stroke, 313K miles. Never had a wrench on the engine. Been ALL OVER with it. Crew cab, bench seats, rubber floors, hand crank windows, seats six comfortably. Had to order it that way! It's the only vehicle I've bought that didn't feel like I lost my a$$ on!

The Allegheny National Forest has miles and miles of gated roads that are closed to motorized vehicles.  This is the new running and gunning.  Oh and my 1187 does double duty as a kick stand.

Used to be a 2003 ford ranger 4wd but had to trade it in to get my wife a new car.  Now it will be a 2009 Nissan Pathfinder 4WD.  Back in the day I hauled critters in an 81 corolla hatchback.
