Something I've always wondered. Why do people only condition a small area on glass/crystal pot calls. Every pot call I have, first thing I do is condition the whole surface. Why limit it to one small spot. Is it just personal choice or is there s deeper reason. Just curious.
Personal choice...
Yes...i would say personal choice...but why the whole thing....sweet spot usually only a certain distance from the edge...i do sometimes the top 1/3...i won't buy a pot that the whole thing is conditioned..again just a personal choice
The appearance of the call mostly. If you ever decide to re sale the call , many wont buy it including myself, if it is conditioned all over the entire surface. Also you actually only use some of the area of the call to play on , so many feel there is no need to scratch up the whole surface. Most custom call makers know where the sweet spots are on their pots and thats where they condition them.
One of my first custom pots I never leave home without I conditioned the whole surface. I didn't buy it to resell, trade,or look at. When I'm hunting I don't have to look at where it's conditioned . The call sounds great and the whole things a sweet spot. Wish I would have notched it for every turkey that has been called in with it like some guys do with boxcalls.. I have a couple that I have the whole surface conditioned, but since my addiction of pot calls even though I barely ever sell or trade I keep them conditioned in the small spot so they will hold more value in my opinion.
Just personal preference.. like said before. Appearance is something to consider when selling and quite frankly I like to see the artwork inside if it has any. I buy and sell calls and if a call is conditioned on the whole surface, it is highly unlikely to sell and I personally don't buy them.
I condition half. That's plenty to work any bird. Course I don't resell any calls I have. They are either goid enough to hunt or something I wouldn't sell to anyone else.

That's pretty much how I feel about why I condition the whole thing. Yes the sweet spot is a certain distance from the edge, but conditioning the whole thing gives me that distance all around the call. Re-sell value doesn't matter much to me.
Thanks for the replies all. I'm already playing around with my calls waiting for spring
Sometimes I condition some of my pot calls in 4 spots.
12 o'clock
3 o'clock
6 o'clock
9 o'clock
Each spot is conditioned in a different method.
I'm always trying to play something different when they don't want to answer.
Probably all in my head though.............LOL
