It's that time of year again... I keep a couple diaphragms in the ashtray of my truck and annoy the heck out of any one with me... what's everybody's best tips on sounding as close to an actual hen as you can? Scott Ellis has got a video on YouTube on yelping with a clean front note and I'm working on that but haven't quite got that down yet... I think it definitely helps the tone of your calling sound a lot better. Any tips on getting that better tone or tips in general?
I've found a method that works 100% of the time. Get up early, go to the local farmers place and "borrow" a live hen. That's the closest you can get to realistic. There's been plenty of real hens that don't sound realistic IMO. Don't sweat it so long as you can get close.
I'm not sweating it too awful bad.... I've seen some not so great sounding calling out turkeys in the dirt time and time again (some of which has been mine), however I like the idea of sounding as realistic as I can!
X2 I've heard some horrible sounding hens I would have swore were a beginner calling. Practice makes purrrfect,but I'm no proffessional with a mouthcall and have used them with a great amount of success when I do use them. I would buy some cds of live turkeys and maybe some how to one's done by respected callers if I was wanting to get better..

Don't worry about the perfect note, worry about the type of vocalization, rhythm, inflection, etc. there's a big difference in communication between a Yelp and a cluck or a cluck and a putt. As for what rings out good in the woods, I personally like a wingbone, or a good mouth call, or a good pot call. Heck they all sound more or less like a turkey, and if you can run a few yelps with any call it should sound like a turkey to another turkey. I think it's more important to know how and when and what specific calls to make.

For a kid that killed a sackful of Bigguns last season, all by himself, you sure complain a lot.

Appalachianassasin, few woodhavens and zinks then one mad calls one that I like.... and hooter who knows if I had sounded a little better maybe I could've sealed the deal on number 4 last year ha! And holler at me about the NWTF show.

Bugman ive got the copperhead and copperhead 2 and just can't seem to get that tone out of either of those
