Title: 7yr old load recommendation
Post by: Poleaxe on January 17, 2017, 12:05:50 AM
I'm gonna try and put my 7yr old son on a bird this coming season.  I know the worst thing to do is to put to much of a gun into a kids hands to early like my old man did and it took me years to get over my flinching. I bought him a mossberg 500 20 super bantam. What would some of you recommend shooting through it that wouldn't thump him? I'm not gonna let him shoot the turkey load until he shoots at the bird so he won't think about it so much.  If anyone has any experience with this gun and give me a choke recommendation also id appreciate it also.

High brass upland loads in 6s pattern the gun with some different shells and chokes and go with the best. Cant see how you wouldn't be able to easily find one of those loads to get the job done to 25-30 yards. Good luck!

My daughter was very trigger shy at first. I had her practice with cheap light target loads and even put a pound of lead in the stock to soften it up. With the turkey loads  I was worried about the pattern being to tight at close ranges in the woods so I loaded it with some high brass 7 1/2s. It gave a good open pattern at 25 and when her first Gobbler stepped in the open at 15 yards he didn't know what hit him. Good luck with whatever you choose and enjoy.

Keep the shot under 25yds and use 2 3/4 high brass 7 1/2 shot with the factory full choke.  It worked for my 8 year old.

Something I do w kids is pattern a gun myself. The kids than practice w very light loads n They shoot the hunt shell only when we hunt. Adrenaline overloads them a bit n they never seem to notice

I used Hevi-13 7's with my son when he was little.

I have my children practice shooting only light 2 3/4 loads at close range and then switch to 3" turkey loads in the field. (20 gauge) When their face to face with Gobbler they never feel it.

Poleaxe I got the same gun for my 6 & 8 yr old about 2 yrs ago.  I put a 6 position pistol grip stock on it to shorten it up even more then will be able to extended out as they grow very easily and I can also use it myself! :icon_thumright: I let mine shot low brass.   I pattern it myself with Remington premier turkey loads and they do great through the under taker choke I have in it.   The mornings we go out I slip the turkey load in and they never know it.  Same way my dad did with a 12 835 he would slip in a 3 1/2 and I ever knew it.  God bless
