Title: Trough calls
Post by: Beards and Hooks on December 28, 2016, 02:29:57 PM
Love to hear everyone's opinions on them, I don't own any but I am curious. What do you like about them, preference which materials, what call makers do you like? What are you looking at price wise, I have researched them a little and they seem to be a little bit of an oddity as to which guys make them, love to see some pix if your willing to share, thanks guys and look forward to learning!

Loving the feedback guys, appreciate it please keep it coming. Why are trough calls rarely talked about on here and made by even fewer guys, because a pot is more versatile? When would you prefer them over a pot? Just spitballing questions as they come in mind, as I have never played with one, appreciate thee feedback!

John Tanner makes a slate trough which is the best I've heard.  I own two of them and they are deadly on the birds.  I also have a Bullock copper trough which is top notch!!

I'm sure that a Mike Lapp trough is fantastic, I don't have one of his yet but I do have one from Mark McPhail and it is one sweet call and he's a great guy to talk to.

I use my trough call like I would use a pot call. They will make any call the pot will do. They fit the hand nicely and they run about the same all the way up and down the surface. They also fit nicely into your pocket if u don't use a vest. I was drawn to them because of the simplicity and the fact that not a lot of people made them.

I don't know about Hersch but I'll tell you my take on advantage. Let's say you roost birds or have birds close, they soft talk nice. Also certain calls for some people, say trough calls, scratch boxes, etc many use a slower/softer rhythm on. Some guys can hammer on a scratch box but some can't n we're talking troughs.
Many can be placed down n played one handed n put all that together imo it's an advantage. Purr n cluck great too.
Another weapon in your arsenal n it's always best to play it easy than pour it on if you had to

I have one made by Ford Mangum. He lives bout 15 mins away. His trough calls sound more like a turkey than any other call made (besides a mouth call being run by an above avg caller) for soft stuff. Purrs are spot on.

As stated, Bob Fulcher's are stuffed full of turkey. Brent Stoner, of BeReady Custom Calls, also makes a killer of a trough call.

Mike Lapp made this one for me. It has two playing surfaces, aluminum and corian for two different sounds.

Hey Rickey, do you like that? I was talking with Mike last night and he said he was putting the 2 surfaces on them standard now. I like the concept of it.

I'm with Bowguy 100% on the advantages/differences.  I just find it easier to go real soft with a trough call. For that reason it's something that I'll typically use first thing in the morning when I'm set up near roosted birds.  Easier for me to replicate those soft tree talk yelps and clucks with the trough call than with any of my pot calls.  Generally once they hit the ground the trough call gets set aside in favor of one of the pot calls.  I tend to hunt pretty heavy timber and I find that the pot calls will cut through the underbrush better than the trough.  If I have a gobbler working but he gets hung up just out of sight them I may pull the trough call out again to try to sweetly soft talk him in.

All of Bob Fulcher's calls are cream puffs!  Got a couple scratch boxes that are phenomenal.

Resurrecting a thread from couple weeks ago...Here's a trough I traded a great guy here on OG just last year.  Mr. Kirby's own personal trough call.  Means a lot to have this from his collection.
