Title: December turkey story
Post by: g8rvet on December 26, 2016, 02:57:31 PM
Was hunting a North Florida WMA two weeks ago for ducks and it was SLOW.  Had only fired one shot. About an hour after legal, we hear a bird gobble.  We mouth called a few times at it to see if we could get it to gobble back. It did not.  We then hear a rooster crow from the same general direction and figure it is in a pen.  We forget about it and go back to talking.  About 30 minutes or so later, he gobbles again and he is CLOSE.  We are on an island and hunting a series of islands, large islands with cleared pine and some hardwoods.  Would be perfect to turkey hunt.  We mouth call again and get him fired up on a warm December morning.  He comes right to the point of a nearby island and proceeds to gobble for that hen that never shows. I pull out my phone and check to be sure that turkeys are not legal to take where we are (they were not).  We almost had a duck hunt turn into a turkey hunt.  He did give us a little taste of spring in December though.  As we were packing up, we had a deer swim by our setup at about 200 yards.  A fun morning, with no ducks to show.
