I have a couple of box calls from a guy named Larry Tackett from West Virginia. I bought them off e-bay. I was wondering if anyone else had used his calls. In my opinion the calls sound good are very well made and really hold up well. Problem is after reading many posts about how good the calls of others are on this forum. I realized I don't know if my calls are great, good or only fair?
From Larry, fair at best. He makes a good looking call but they definitely aren't the best sounding call by any means. I ordered 3, returned 2 and gave one to my nephew. In the end though, if you're happy with them, that's all matters. They'll call turkeys but it's probably going to be a hot one if any at all.
I appreciate the feedback. Now could you tell me one really good box call that you consider outstanding and perhaps point me toward some sound files? I understand that the sound of a Turkey call is subjective. But I want to gain a better understanding of what others think a good call sounds like. Personally, I am self taught, mostly, and hate the thought I may be missing out. Thanks.
Get yourself an ss custom call you wont go wrong and you won't wait

That's really no particular order. Any box those guys put their names on are all turkey. Some are more desirable by collectors than others due to availability from call makers, but you won't be disappointed with any of the makers I listed. Also I'm sure I left out some awesome builders as well.

I would suggest a field grade SS kwila/butternut. It's one of the best sounding boxes I own and I have a lot of boxes from a lot of makers. Better ones can involve a higher cost and longer wait time. Just my opinion based on what you seem to be wanting without going too deep into box call world.

While I don't have this particular combination, I'd agree with getting an SS box for sure. I've got their purpleheart over cedar and it's a winner. Also, I've got a Mabry purpleheart over Spanish cedar, walnut over poplar and a long box on the way but I don't recall the combination at the moment but I believe it's a butternut box. One that's not been listed yet is a spring creek box. Mike makes a good box and they're quite affordable. They certainly fall into the short box category as it's the shortest of the boxes I own by far but it certainly produces a few turkeys for sure. If you're looking to cut down on the bulk and still have a short box, it's an excellent place to start. It's a bloodwood over cherry. The large list above is a good list to be certain. Also, don't overlook a good scratch box. They will produce great turkey sounds with almost zero bulk and again, I'd either look at spring creek or SS. Many other makers produce great scratch boxes but these are the only two I've gotten familiar with. They take a bit of time to master compared to a box call but there's a lot of ability in those little guys and kentuckyheadhunter makes some nice ones as well.

Thank you all for the outstanding feedback. I have just looked at the SS Calls and they are truly some fine looking calls. The list of call makers has put me on the right track. I will explore each call maker.
I think the field grade is exactly what I am looking for in a call. You are correct in that I do not want to go too deep into the world of box calls. I am much more focused on hunting, just need to upgrade my calls to the next level and reduce from about thirty to five.
Good luck with that. Once you buy a custom call or two, you'll have 30 more anyway so get ready to start parting with your expendable income.
