Title: Pup got it done this morning
Post by: wvmntnhick on September 24, 2016, 09:59:59 AM
Not going to bore everyone to death with all the mundane details. He tree'd this one this morning. He was a bit uncertain but I tied him to the tree until he decided he was right. Gun cracked, squirrel fell, all is good. Real proud of him. Now, if I could just get him to stop chasing deer. Doesn't bother me with the turkeys so much but the deer are an issue.

Well done Kris.  He might just get the hang of it!  I love me some squirrel dumplings.

nice job on his first squirrel

E-collers work great for fixing dogs running deer, I'd get on that quick before it becomes a habit

You don't see it in the pic because id already taken it off him. E-collars do work well if used properly. I've also seen them ruin dogs just as easily. In fact, I bumped him lightly on two separate occasions yesterday. The second time he ended up sitting at the truck waiting for me to come put him in it to go home. Actually thought I'd set him back quite a bit. That's why I took him out this morning again. He seemed to still be just fine. Treed this one and ran another up a tree but we lost him. I was pleased to say the least.

I had three good Feist dogs during my squirrel days. I started all of them with dead squirrels I'd drag and hide. After they got good at finding them, I'd pull the squirrel up a tree. Next, I would catch grays in a trap. These were used to make them start barking, treeing on their own and loving to hate a squirrel. I'd put a squirrel and the puppy in a cardboard box ( non of the squirrels were ever harmed) and when it began to sound like I needed to call an ambulance, I'd release them both. Well, the squirrel was fine, but the pup would have a sore nose. When the squirrel would run from the box to the tree with puppy right behind, mad and sore, that's all it took. They hated them forever. Wish I had a dollar for every squirrel I put in the vest with those three. Good luck, Hope yours turns out to be a dandy.
