Title: Public land mule deer
Post by: Fieldturkey on August 30, 2016, 07:14:44 PM
Fellas, I live in North Carolina. I really want to go west and shoot a muley. I dont want to pay a guide and I want to pack everything in and out. Also not looking for a trophy by any means. Just looking for an adventure and a chance. Are any of you guys willing to share some advice or places to start via PM?

Ben

There are lots of places where you can shoot a public-lands mule deer in the west fairly easily if you are willing to work at it a bit and use the right tactics.  Many western states have "draws" for tags nowadays, and the best areas often have poor odds of drawing a permit.  You should do a bit of research on which states offer the best opportunity.

You can hunt mule deer under a variety of conditions, as well.  They range from the wide-open desert landscapes of the southwest to the classic high-altitude hunting found in the upper reaches of the western mountain ranges.  You can hunt them in sweltering conditions, or in sub-zero temps.  Again, if you are looking for a particular type of experience, do your research.

I often get Facebook ads from Nebraska to hunt mule deer with an over the counter tag. I'm thinking that must mean northwest. Don't know but check it out.

x2 on nebraska. Over the counter license. Trophy Quality is ok.
Looks like a good hunt. muzzleloader season is the whole month of December.
It's on my radar.
