For those of you that have shortboxes with a maccasar ebony paddle what wood do you have for the box and how does it sound?
I don't own one, but I did play one of Jeff McKamey's at the nationals this year that had a teak box that I really liked!
Have not personally tried all of these, but have heard some good ones.
Persimmon
Butternut
Black Limba
Poplar
I have a Whitt maccasar ebony over black limba that sounds pretty good.
Ebony over holly makes a fine box too!!
Albert Paul makes one and calls it his Henry Davis call.

Got one. It sounds fantastic!
I have the same Henrey Davis edition call from Albert Paul. It sounds really good , however i have one from Marlin Watkins that is over persimmon. Its one of my personal favorites out of a truckload of box calls i own.
I have two macassar box calls, the first is a Halloran ebony over poplar, and also a Marlin Watkins Ebony over persimmon. I personally think those are two of the finest boxes I own. I have a couple boxes with leopardwood lids from AL over at SS calls, and that is another one to think about.
over holly or persimmon
I went with yellow poplar and really like it, but was going to go holly if I hadn't.
Anyone have a sound file of their ebony over persimmon, or be able to describe the sound?
