Planning a trip to Nebraska next spring with a few co-workers. It's a foreign world for us outside of Missouri. Looking to try and kill our first Merriams. Not wanting anyone's spots, but am looking for a general areas to start our focus and planning. We are looking into camping so being close to a town isnt a necessity. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!
May add we are looking to shotgun hunt. When also would you recommend?
Hunt near Chadron in the late season.
Buddy and I hunted in the North Platte/Maxwell area April 22 - 25 this year. Weather was great and there were plenty of birds but true Merriams were few and far between. The outfitter we were with swears they get a lot of Merriam's at their Eastern NE camp near Genoa. We were hunting private property and had a great time but if it's true Merriams that you're after then I would agree with previous poster who suggested Chadron area.
I hunted Chadron two years ago. Wildfire decimated a lot of the public area, but heard a ton of birds. I would recommend earlier more than late as they do get pressured
Gotta watch the weather closely to hunt early.
Few years back we ended up in snow up to our waists and 50 mph winds the 3rd week of April in the panhandle !!!
I'd opt for sometime in May, myself, from what I ran into in April.............
I went the first week of their shotgun season this past spring. We hunted near Chadron with an outfitter. It was an awesome hunt. We lucked out and the weather was good. If I was camping I would agree with yoder and go in May.
