Title: Help with nice 8 point road kill in full velvet
Post by: WNCTracker on May 29, 2016, 10:13:33 PM
I was out on the four wheeler this morning and 2 bucks were killed by a car last night together, one of them was a very nice 8 point in full velvet maybe a 16" spread.  The velvet is still very vascular and I'm concerned it's just going to rot  as I dry it since it smells and bugs are flocking to it.  I'm headed home tomorrow and want to try to preserve the velvet on the antlers.  It is currently in perfect condition and really amazing.  I googled it and there are videos on injections etc and some say just use borax in a bucket for 2 months.  I am curious if any taxidermists on here have advice for the easiest way for me to preserve the velvet on the antlers.  Thanks in advance :thanks:

Freeze dry them.  There is also a spray that they use, but I don't recall the name.

I shot a full velvet deer last  year and all they did was stick it in a freezer next to the vent....no issues so far
