Title: One more chance!
Post by: JK Spurs on May 29, 2016, 04:03:02 PM
Well, tomorrow is the last day that I can hunt the PA season. I've had non stop action all month...about 15 encounters with gobblers but haven't been able to fill one tag. On two occasions I've had birds at 10 yards and could not get a shot! Every one of my set ups these birds have come in exactly to a spot that I can't shoot. It's truly amazing...first two weeks I came home crying and the last two weeks all I can do is laugh when they out smart me. Of course, the only two birds that presented perfect shots were two jakes. Tomorrow I exit the season with that Tom hanging off my shoulder or I tip my hat and say good game...see ya next year!

Pick the spot you want the gobbler to be in when you take that fatal shot, then set you decoys to bring him in where you want him and so that he can see them from a long way off. For example, being right handed I set my decoys so that I can ideally shoot slightly to my left and about 20-25 yards away. I set a gobbler decoy directly behind and above a hen on the ground. Using my gobbler tube, I let area toms know that an intruder is invading their territory which may be enough to bring them in. When they see the decoy set up, not only is the peck order being challenged but the right to breed is on the line. I filled all three of my Illinois spring tags using this technique. By-the-way, I've taken several gobblers by shooting left handed when they came silently from a direction I didn't expect. After all, turkeys will be turkeys!
