Title: Freezer Shelf Life
Post by: Oldschoolguy on May 19, 2016, 12:23:45 PM
I just found two turkey breast in my big freezer dated 4-26-15. Do you guys think they are still good? Anyone ever kept wild turkey for a year then ate it? Any opinions would be appreciated.

If you have it wrapped good, nothing wrong with eating it or making jerky with it.

I've cooked five year old turkey (and duck, goose, deer and other game) after finding a misplaced bag. A lot will depend on what you froze it in. If vacuum sealed or covered completely with water, it should be fine. Only thing to be concerned with is freezer burn, and you can easily see the affected area. If freezer burn is localized, you can cut it off and cook the rest. But, I'd recommend cutting it up and frying rather than grill or roast.

You need to get yourself a Food Saver and you will never again have to worry about how old it is. I found a bag of fish that was dated 6 years before and it tasted like it was caught last week.

X2 agree also don't buy the cheap food bags or rolls either, always buy the food saver brand, lot better bags or rolls for freezing.

The only thing that might be wrong with it would be freezer burn. Other than that it's just fine.

Just cut off any freezer burned areas and cook away.

I'd probably be inclined to brine it, but other than that I wouldn't hesitate to use it.

I freeze mine in a ziplock bag filled with water and I've ate them two years old with no problem.

Just cooked some two year old breasts for a bunch of folks, no complaints.  One little edge had freezer burn and I just cut it out.  Vacuum sealing is the way to go, but they usually don't last thatlong for me.  I had a bag that had gotten rotated under some other meat and I had pulled out newer turkey.  Was sick when I found it but it was fine.

I freeze mine in water...Found some from 2014. Thawed it with some trepidation. It was still good.
As others have said, as long as no freezer burn, you should be o.k.

X3.  They work great!  No worries about how long with a food saver
