First off, my gun is already drilled and tapped...
However, it seems that many are partial to the lower sitting 336 style mount made by Marlin. From what I gather this type base has 2 holes as opposed to the 4 my gun has currently D&T. Apparently these 2 holes are also a different size or at least I have read that the 336 uses a different size screw.
I thought that I could have the base redrilled to fit the holes currently D&T in my 870 but am now afraid that will not be the case, and instead the gun itself will need to be D&T again
While I do like the idea of the lower sitting sight on the 336 base, I do wonder if this process is not too much sugar for a dime, so to speak. perhaps I should just find a base that fits what I have and not worry if it sits slightly higher
In search of any and all ideas, opinions and suggestions.
Thanks
The 336 base is nice but other options are not bad either. I have 3 guns with ff3 on top. 2 I had drilled and tapped for the 336 base as they were not drilled/tapped from the factory, the 3rd gun a Benelli SBE2 Steady Grip was so I went with a Warne base on it to match existing factory holes. It does sit a little higher but not to much. I did add a God a Grip shotgun wedge to raise my cheek up off stock slightly and it is great.
I am not sure what the rear 2 holes in your remington measure but if all it is going to take is opening the holes a little it wouldn't be that exspensive. Contact Sumtoy Customs, he quoted me a great price to drill/tap a gun that has no holes so just sizing up I would think would be real reasonable.
IMO the ff3 is the best sighting system out there right now for a dedicated turkey gun.
Good luck

I use a standard picitnny rial that was chopped down to closely fit the footprint of the sight. I like the 336 base on my 835 but do not want to drill any more holes in my 870 receiver.

Thanks for the replies.
I am certainly hesitant about drilling a gun that is already D & T. Thanks for some ideas and reassurance guys
Not sure the pics tinny will allow me to shoot brad, as my gun came standard with rifle sights. I suppose I could remove and add a bead. The bead is what I always shot and had issues this year getting in a turkey that had decided to get out of dodge. Just not very efficient in getting those rifle sights lined up quickly.
I think the FF3 will be a little better. Certainly missed that bead this year in those instances where the shot needed to be quick. Maybe hunt alone and avoid that situation. Haha
Still open to any others with experiences and suggestions.
Thanks again!
Did your 870 come from the factory drilled and tapped or did you have it done? Is it a 12 or 20 gauge? If you already stated that info and I missed it, my apology.
If your 870 was factory drilled and tapped, and is a 12 gauge then Weaver makes a base that is like the 336 but will mount on an 870.

It is a 12 ga. And did come factory drilled and tapped.
Thanks for that link, that seems like that may be the way to go there. Now, I have to persuade wife into FF3 for Father's Day !
Cabela's has the AR-F3 on sale for $199.99, I think they normally run about $300.00.
Average price on FF III is about $239...I paid $219 three years ago. That should give you an idea of value...You'll be happy with FF III. It's a great sight...
I saw that deal at cabelas but wasn't sure if that would be ideal for a shotgun as it Appears that is for an AR.
Guess it's the same with exception of the base....
I have about decided that a Weaver 429 will be closest I come to the 336
It is a FF III with a protective cover.
Jumped on the Cabelas AR styleFFIII for $199. Hopeful that it will not be much to convert for my 870 SM.
