Title: Hunting High Winds
Post by: BOFF on April 03, 2011, 11:29:56 PM
I hate hunting high winds, just due to lack of hearing, and the birds on our area don't seem to like it.

But, ya gotta hunt the days available. The only thing I like about it is being able to get away with some movement. It's gonna be 15-25 mph winds throughout the night and tomorrow before the storms.

What are your methods for hunting high winds?

God Bless,
David B.

High winds here usually mean branches falling out of trees.  I stay home.  There aren't many fields where I hunt.

If you have any cider thickets with openings in them I would try 'em out. I have killed a couple of gobblers that way and the opening were only maybe 30 yds in diameter. Try hunting in the valleys or the back side of some hills. Just get anywhere where the wind is not blowing as hard and you will usually find them there.

On windy days I like to hit the fields and do some loud calling. Turkeys get spooked out a little when they are in the woods and it gets to blowing 10 to 20. This sometimes puts them out in the open areas where they can see anything that may try to sneak up on them.

Anything above 20 gets tough. Sometimes you can do good to stalk up on small openings in thick cover or anywhere there is a really good wind break. When it gets up into the 30s and 40mph the birds just disappear. I think they hole up in thick cover and wait it out. That makes it really hard to kill a turkey!

On windy days,10 to 25mph, I like to set up on big fields, I'll use 2 or 3 decoys, call every 15 min or so, don't over call.

Hunt fields or draws depending on terrain hunted.  Call loud and frequently
